Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Francia 2017 is a powerful yet remarkably polished expression of one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most celebrated crus. Presented in a 1.5-litre magnum, it combines Nebbiolo’s classic structure with the unusual purity, richness and supple texture of the warm 2017 vintage. Francia has long been regarded as one of Piedmont’s benchmark vineyards, and this bottling reflects the Conterno family’s traditional, uncompromising approach.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red with garnet highlights, the wine opens with intense aromas of black and purple berries, crème de cassis, grilled rosemary and warm, stony earth. Subtle notes of rusty iron and baked terracotta add the savoury complexity associated with Serralunga’s Nebbiolo.
The palate is concentrated yet graceful, with velvety tannins, vibrant acidity and impressive depth. Rich fruit is balanced by mineral and savoury nuances, while the finish is long, energetic and finely detailed. The 2017 vintage gives the wine unusual generosity and approachability, but its structure and concentration promise outstanding development over the next 15–25 years, with the magnum offering particularly strong ageing potential.
Production
The Francia vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, where calcareous soils and a relatively warm, well-exposed site contribute both power and mineral depth. Nebbiolo is harvested by hand and vinified according to Giacomo Conterno’s traditional style, with careful extraction to preserve the grape’s perfume, structure and longevity. The wine is matured in large oak vessels, allowing the fruit and terroir to develop without obscuring their character.
Food & Serving
Serve at 17–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. Decanting for around two hours is recommended when opening it young, although older bottles may benefit from a more cautious decant to separate the wine from any sediment. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for braised beef, roasted game, truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto, osso buco and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in 1908, Giacomo Conterno is one of Barolo’s most revered traditional producers. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the estate is renowned for its long-lived wines, meticulous vineyard work and profound expressions of Nebbiolo, particularly from the Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. Conterno’s Barolos are celebrated internationally for their ability to combine power, complexity and elegance, and are considered reference points for the denomination.
