Description

Giacomo Conterno’s Francia Barbera d’Alba 2022 is a powerful, deeply expressive red from one of Piedmont’s most revered estates. Sourced from the lower section of the famed Francia vineyard, this Barbera combines intense dark fruit with the structure and depth normally associated with great Nebbiolo terroirs. In a warming climate, Barbera thrives, and this 2022 shows how the variety can deliver richness, freshness, and a sense of place even in a notably ripe year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Francia Barbera d’Alba is a deep, vibrant ruby with purplish highlights that signal both youth and concentration. The nose is immediately complex and persistent, layering dark cherry and black plum with notes of sous-bois, potting soil, wet iron, and a gentle earthy spice. With air, the fruit profile blossoms, gaining intensity and precision, shifting toward ripe black cherry and hints of blackberry. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Barbera with substantial weight and presence, supported by a generous 15.5% alcohol that is well integrated into the wine’s dense core of fruit. The mouthfeel is broad and enveloping, with polished acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its scale. Flavors echo the nose—black cherry, dark berries, and earthy tones—accented by subtle iron and mineral notes that speak clearly of the Francia vineyard. The finish is long, savory, and layered. While already impressive in its youth, this cuvée has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and harmony with time in bottle.

Production
The Francia Barbera d’Alba 2022 comes from the lower part of the historic Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, a site better known for Nebbiolo but equally suited to producing world-class Barbera. The upper sections are rich in calcareous soils, transitioning into sandy layers and blue marl below—a dense, almost cement-like subsoil that slowly fractures near the surface, forcing vines to dig deep for nutrients and water. Barbera vines here were originally planted in 1974, with ongoing replanting over the years as the estate manages vine health, including challenges like Esca disease, which has become a growing concern. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to balance Barbera’s natural acidity with the richness of the 2022 vintage. In the cellar, Giacomo Conterno adheres to traditional, low-intervention methods: long macerations and fermentation in large vessels, followed by aging in large neutral botti to preserve purity of fruit, terroir expression, and the hallmark structure and depth that define the estate’s wines.

Food & Serving
This Barbera’s intensity and richness make it a superb match for hearty Piedmontese and Italian dishes: braised beef, osso buco, game birds, rich ragù over tajarin, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature pecorino. It also works beautifully with roasted root vegetables, grilled lamb, and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms, which echo the wine’s earthy undertones. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to balance freshness and depth. Given its concentration and youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromatics to fully open and the structure to soften into a more seamless, expansive palate.

Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the benchmark names in Piedmont, and indeed in the world of fine wine. Founded in the early 20th century and long associated with the creation of some of Barolo’s most iconic, age-worthy wines, the domaine is now under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, who has upheld a philosophy of uncompromising quality and traditional craftsmanship. The acquisition and development of the Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba marked a turning point, providing a singular, top-tier terroir for both Nebbiolo and Barbera. Through meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and patient élevage in large casks, Giacomo Conterno has become synonymous with purity, structure, and longevity, and its wines—Barolo and Barbera alike—are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts across the globe.
