Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Cerretta 2021 is a refined expression of Serralunga d’Alba, presented here in a generous magnum format. While it is the most immediately approachable of Conterno’s 2021 Barolos, it retains the estate’s hallmark combination of Nebbiolo-driven structure, aromatic precision and long-term potential. Cerretta is part of the modern history of one of Piedmont’s most revered traditional Barolo producers.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows the classic profile of a young Barolo, with a bright ruby-red colour beginning to develop the garnet hues associated with Nebbiolo. On the nose, floral notes gradually emerge alongside delicate spice, dried herbs and subtle earthy nuances. With aeration, the bouquet becomes more expressive and layered.
On the palate, Cerretta 2021 is finely balanced, offering firm but well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and a persistent finish. It appears slightly less deep and complex than Conterno’s other 2021 Barolos, but this gives it an appealing harmony at an earlier stage. The wine should begin to open after a few years in bottle and has the structure to develop further over the following decade or longer.
Production
Produced from Nebbiolo grown in the Cerretta cru in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most respected villages, this wine reflects the area’s limestone- and marl-rich soils and its ability to produce deeply structured, age-worthy Nebbiolo. Giacomo Conterno follows a traditional approach, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to take centre stage through careful harvesting and restrained cellar work. Extended maturation in large oak casks supports the wine’s development while preserving its freshness and clarity.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C after allowing the wine to come gradually to temperature. A decant of one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the wine young, particularly from magnum, as it will help release its floral and spicy aromas and soften the youthful tannins. It pairs beautifully with braised beef, veal, game birds, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms, rich pasta preparations and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in the early 20th century, Giacomo Conterno has become one of Piedmont’s benchmark estates and a defining name in traditional Barolo. The estate is especially celebrated for Monfortino, its historic Riserva, while its Barolos from celebrated vineyards such as Cerretta demonstrate the same commitment to longevity, site expression and classical winemaking. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the producer is widely regarded as one of the region’s most important custodians of traditionally made, cellar-worthy Barolo.
