Description
Bottled in an impressive 3L double magnum, Giacomo Conterno’s Cerretta Barolo 2020 is a powerful yet finely etched expression of Serralunga d’Alba Nebbiolo. This is Barolo with muscle and depth, wrapped in a luxurious, velvety tannic frame that already hints at great complexity. The 2020 vintage is celebrated for its elegance, and in Cerretta it marries richness, energy, and poise in a way that promises both early charm and long-term evolution.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cerretta Barolo shows a deep garnet core with the classic brick-tinged rim that Nebbiolo reveals even in its youth. The nose is layered and expressive: dark cherries and macerated plum meet notes of rusted iron, dried rose petals, bitter orange marmalade and a subtle ferrous, mineral edge that speaks clearly of Serralunga. Hints of licorice, sweet tobacco and underbrush unfold with time in the glass.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and authoritative, with greater volume and richness than many peers from the vintage. Dark red and black fruits are wrapped in a refined but firm tannic structure, described by critics as almost velvety, like the soft outer texture of antler. The interplay between the sweet-sour nuance of bitter orange, the savoriness of iron and earth, and the purity of fruit adds complexity and length. The acidity is vibrant yet seamless, giving lift to the generous mid-palate and driving a long, savory finish. In a 3L format, the aging potential is substantial—expect this wine to evolve beautifully over 20–30 years or more, gaining additional tertiary notes of truffle, leather and dried herbs while the tannins continue to polish.
Production
Cerretta is a revered cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its compact, limestone-rich clay soils and steep, well-exposed slopes that give Nebbiolo both power and minerality. Yields are kept low, and fruit is carefully hand-harvested, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the most pristine bunches are used. Giacomo Conterno follows a traditional Barolo philosophy: extended macerations on the skins and fermentation in large vats, followed by long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. This patient, minimalist approach allows the character of Cerretta’s terroir to shine through with clarity and depth, particularly in a generous yet refined vintage like 2020.
Food & Serving
This Cerretta Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shank, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the tannins. In this youthful stage, especially from a 3L, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its layers; as it matures, a shorter decant of around one hour will help release its bouquet while preserving subtlety.
Producer
The Conterno name is synonymous with the very highest echelon of traditional Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate under Giacomo and later Roberto Conterno has become a benchmark not just for Piedmont, but for ageworthy, terroir-driven red wine worldwide. Based in Monforte d’Alba and best known for the legendary Monfortino, Giacomo Conterno has carefully expanded its holdings to include top sites such as Cerretta, treating each cru with the same uncompromising standards. The winery’s steadfast commitment to long aging in large oak, low yields, and meticulous selection has earned it a reputation for producing some of the most profound, collectible and long-lived Baroli in the region.
