Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2019 in magnum format is a powerful, ageworthy expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the Cerretta vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine marries structure, depth and finesse in a way that rewards both patience and close attention. The larger 1.5 L format makes it particularly well-suited for long-term cellaring or for sharing on truly special occasions. First produced after the Conterno family acquired parcels in Cerretta, this Barolo has quickly become one of the estate’s most sought-after crus, sitting alongside the legendary Monfortino and Cascina Francia in the pantheon of great Italian reds. It captures the hallmark traits of Serralunga—firm tannins, mineral intensity and profound longevity—framed by the meticulous, time-honored craftsmanship that has made Giacomo Conterno a benchmark name in Barolo for over a century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Cerretta Barolo 2019 shows a luminous, deep garnet hue with a clear, brick-tinged rim that hints at its classic Nebbiolo character. The wine is youthful yet already elegant, with a visual density that suggests both concentration and finesse.
The nose opens slowly but with great precision: rose petals, violet, and dried red cherries lead, followed by blood orange peel, sweet tobacco, anise, crushed herbs and a distinct ferrous, stony minerality typical of Serralunga. Subtle notes of cedar, leather and spice emerge with air, promising a complex evolution over time.
On the palate, the 2019 Cerretta is taut and vertical, with finely etched acidity guiding flavors of sour cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate and red currant. Layers of licorice, orange zest, dried flowers and savory spice build in intensity, supported by firm, refined tannins that are authoritative yet polished. The finish is long and persistent, driven by minerality and mouthwatering freshness rather than sheer weight.
This is a Barolo designed for the cellar: in magnum, its aging potential is amplified, and it should easily evolve over 20–30 years or more in optimal conditions. While it can be approached in its youth with sufficient aeration, patience will be richly rewarded as the structure relaxes and the aromatics grow increasingly complex and tertiary.
Production
The Cerretta vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most esteemed communes, known for its compact marl and limestone-rich soils that yield wines of power, structure and remarkable longevity. The vines benefit from a combination of altitude and exposure that provides excellent diurnal range, preserving acidity and aromatic definition while allowing Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and fully. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly mature clusters are selected, a crucial step given the minimalist philosophy in the cellar.
In keeping with Giacomo Conterno’s staunchly traditional approach, the Nebbiolo grapes undergo a long maceration to extract color, tannin and complexity, followed by fermentation with great attention to detail but minimal intervention. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing it to develop harmoniously without overt wood influence. This slow, patient élevage preserves the pure expression of Cerretta’s terroir—its mineral backbone, floral lift and savory depth—resulting in a Barolo that is both profoundly classical and unmistakably site-specific.
Food & Serving
This Cerretta Barolo 2019 is a natural partner for richly flavored, earthy dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Think braised beef or veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, wild boar ragù over tajarin, or truffle-infused dishes such as tajarin al tartufo or risotto with porcini and aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Mature hard cheeses like aged Castelmagno, Parmigiano or Pecorino also make excellent companions.
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves without any alcoholic heat. In magnum, and especially in its youth, this Barolo benefits greatly from aeration: decant 2–3 hours before serving if drinking now, and at least 1 hour even as it begins to evolve with bottle age. Use large, tulip-shaped Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to showcase the wine’s layers of perfume and fine-grained tannin.
Producer
Founded in 1908, Giacomo Conterno is one of the most iconic and influential producers in Barolo, widely regarded as a standard-bearer for traditional, long-lived Nebbiolo. Under the stewardship of successive generations—most notably Giovanni and now Roberto Conterno—the estate has remained unwaveringly committed to classic methods: long fermentations, extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks and an almost obsessive focus on vineyard health and fruit quality. From its historic roots in Monforte d’Alba and the legendary Monfortino Riserva, the domaine has expanded its holdings to include top sites such as Cerretta in Serralunga, further cementing its stature in Piedmont.
Today, Giacomo Conterno stands as a reference point for collectors and connoisseurs worldwide, with its wines consistently prized for their purity, depth and extraordinary capacity to age. The Cerretta Barolo is a relatively newer addition compared to the storied Monfortino, but it has rapidly gained recognition as one of the region’s most compelling cru expressions, reflecting both the greatness of Serralunga and the exacting standards of one of Italy’s most revered producers.
