Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2019 is a powerful, classically styled Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the high-performing Cerretta cru in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine marries depth, structure and a striking sense of energy. It stands out for its combination of intensity and finesse, echoing the timeless Barolo style that has made Conterno a benchmark name in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cerretta shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-red highlights at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo from a serious site. The nose opens shyly at first, then unfurls with notes of wild red berries, blackcurrant, blood orange, dried rose petals and hints of iron, rust and subtle spice. With air, more detail emerges: a touch of violet, licorice and earthy minerality.
On the palate, this Barolo is firm, vertical and structured, yet remarkably pure and precise. Silky but assertive tannins frame flavors of sour cherry, wild strawberry, orange zest, and a savory, ferrous undertone that speaks clearly of Serralunga. The acidity is vibrant, giving the wine lift and tension, while the finish is long, textural and layered, suggesting years of positive evolution ahead. Built for aging, this Cerretta will reward patience over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and even greater harmony with time.
Production
Cerretta is a celebrated vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its compact calcareous-clay soils and sun-drenched slopes that yield Nebbiolo of notable power and minerality. The fruit is typically harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. In the cellar, Giacomo Conterno follows a resolutely traditional approach: long macerations on the skins to extract aromatics and structure, followed by extended aging in large neutral Slavonian oak botti. This slow, patient vinification allows the cru and the vintage to speak clearly, with no makeup or modern embellishment.
Food & Serving
This is a serious Barolo that shines alongside equally thoughtful cuisine. Pair it with classic Piedmontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo, tajarin with meat ragù, veal shank, or game birds, as well as truffle-accented dishes and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully develop. Decanting 1–3 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the wine unwind and reveal its full aromatic and textural complexity.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the most iconic names in Barolo, widely regarded as a guardian of traditional Nebbiolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the winery cemented its reputation with the legendary Monfortino, a benchmark for ageworthy Barolo. Over the decades, the Conterno family has acquired and refined some of the Langhe’s finest vineyards, including Cerretta, and continues to work with meticulous vineyard care and uncompromising cellar practices. Their wines are celebrated for their purity, longevity and profound expression of site, making Giacomo Conterno a reference point not only in Piedmont, but in the world of fine wine at large.
