Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2018 is a powerful yet exquisitely refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the Cerretta cru in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine marries muscular structure with crystalline purity and precision. In the glass, it stands as both a homage to classic Barolo and a striking example of how terroir-driven winemaking can deliver intensity without losing elegance.
Tasting Notes
In appearance, the 2018 Cerretta Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections toward the rim, typical of Nebbiolo yet with notable depth and concentration. The nose is tightly woven at first, then slowly unfurls with dark cherry, black raspberry, and wild plum layered over violet, rose petals, and hints of licorice. Underneath the fruit lies a distinctly Serralunga profile: ferrous, rusty mineral tones, notes of damp clay, and a subtle balsamic edge.
On the palate, the wine is firmly structured and vertical, with finely etched yet authoritative tannins that feel both crunchy and nervy—an impression of grape skins and pulp that speaks clearly of the vineyard. Flavors of dark and purple berries mingle with blood orange, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and a long, savory mineral finish. Acidity is vibrant and well integrated, giving the wine lift and precision. While already showing remarkable clarity and definition, this 2018 has substantial aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity, silkier textures, and more tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor, and dried flowers.
Production
Cerretta is a prized cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its clay-rich marl soils mixed with limestone, which yield Barolo of notable structure, depth, and a distinct mineral backbone. The vineyard’s altitude and exposure allow Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving acidity while building tannic intensity and aromatic detail. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit enters the fermentation. True to Giacomo Conterno’s traditional philosophy, vinification typically involves a long maceration on the skins to extract tannin, color, and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large, neutral oak casks (botti). This patient, hands-off approach allows the character of Cerretta and the 2018 vintage to express themselves with purity and precision rather than being shaped by overt cellar techniques.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is best matched with rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and tannins: braised beef or veal (such as brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, and dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Classic Piedmontese fare like tajarin with ragù, agnolotti del plin, or a simple risotto with porcini and Parmigiano Reggiano are excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold fully. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended if enjoyed in the near term; for bottles with a few years of cellar age, a shorter decant of 1–2 hours will be sufficient to reveal its layered complexity.
