Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2017 in magnum format is a powerful yet supremely elegant expression of Serralunga d’Alba. Sourced from high-elevation vines in the historic Cerretta cru, this Barolo shows how a warm vintage can still yield finesse, precision and poise in the right hands. Presented in a 1.5 L magnum, it is crafted for long-term cellaring, shared occasions, and collectors who value both pedigree and age-worthiness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Cerretta Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of finely made Nebbiolo. The nose opens with lifted aromas of sweet red cherry, wild strawberry and fragolino, layered with notes of rose petals, violet, dried herbs and a subtle hint of spice and earth.
On the palate, it is silky and poised, with a long, graceful mid-palate that balances intensity with precision. Ripe red cherries, small red berries and wild rose are wrapped in finely etched yet important tannins that speak to Cerretta’s heavier clay-limestone soils. The 2017 vintage lends a smooth, yielding texture, giving the wine a supple, almost creamy feel without sacrificing structure or freshness. The finish is long, perfumed and mineral, suggesting excellent aging potential. In magnum, this Barolo should evolve beautifully for 15–25+ years, gaining complexity, truffle notes and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Cerretta is a renowned cru in Serralunga d’Alba, sitting at around 400 meters above sea level, where cooler nights and heavier clay-rich soils help the Nebbiolo retain freshness and structure, even in warmer years like 2017. The clay in Serralunga d’Alba retains moisture, helping the vines—planted roughly a quarter of a century ago—to withstand heat and hydric stress, which in turn shapes the firm yet refined tannins and the wine’s elegant frame. Giacomo Conterno is known for meticulous, low-yield viticulture, with careful selection of bunches at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo is used. In the cellar, traditional Barolo methods prevail: long macerations on the skins to extract aromatics, tannins and structure, followed by extended aging in large, neutral oak botti to allow the wine to slowly harmonize while preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Cerretta Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised veal or beef, osso buco, roasted lamb, or game birds like pigeon and duck. It also shines alongside classic Piedmontese fare—tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. Decanting 1–2 hours before serving in its youth helps the tannins soften and the floral and red-fruit notes to unfurl; older bottles from this magnum format can be given a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to fully open.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate stands as one of Barolo’s true benchmarks, synonymous with traditional craftsmanship and uncompromising quality. Founded in the early 20th century and long guided by the visionary stewardship of Giovanni and later Roberto Conterno, the winery helped define the classic, age-worthy style of Barolo built on long macerations and extended aging in large casks. From their iconic Monfortino to cru bottlings like Cerretta, Giacomo Conterno has played a key role in elevating Piedmont’s global reputation, consistently producing some of the region’s most sought-after and collectible wines, renowned for their depth, longevity and transparent expression of terroir.
