Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2016 in Double Magnum (3L) is a commanding expression of Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo, presented in a spectacular large format for serious collectors and special occasions. This vintage is celebrated for its radiance and inner brilliance, weaving intensity and finesse into a wine built for decades of evolution. Bottled by one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists, this Cerretta captures the poised, powerful personality of its famed cru in a particularly refined year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Cerretta Barolo shows a deep, luminous garnet core with classic brick-tinged edges that hint at its Nebbiolo heritage and future development. The nose unfurls gradually, moving from an initial shyness into a complex spectrum of wild red berries, blackcurrant, blood orange, dried roses, rusted iron and subtle spice, all wrapped in a lifted, radiant aromatics profile.
On the palate, the wine is taut and linear at first, reflecting both its youth and the structured character of Cerretta in Serralunga d’Alba. With air, it blossoms into a beautifully woven tapestry of wild berry fruit, tangy citrus, savory mineral tones and a gentle ferrous note, all carried by silk-fine yet authoritative tannins. The acidity is bright and refreshing, cutting through the concentration and lending a sense of energy and length. In this 3L format, the aging potential is outstanding: properly cellared, it should evolve gracefully over 20–30+ years, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, leather and dried herbs while maintaining remarkable freshness.
Production
Cerretta is a prestigious cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that yield deeply structured, long-lived Barolo. The altitude and exposure provide excellent diurnal shifts, preserving acidity and aromatic complexity in the Nebbiolo grapes. Harvest is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In keeping with the traditional Giacomo Conterno style, vinification is straightforward but exacting: long macerations on the skins to extract fine-grained tannins and profound aromatics, followed by extended aging in large neutral botti (traditional large oak casks). This slow, oxidative élevage allows the wine to knit together naturally, emphasizing purity, structure and terroir expression over overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Barolo’s structure and complexity make it a superb partner to rich, savory dishes. Think braised beef or veal shank, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, truffle-infused pasta, mushroom risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or hard Alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. In this young stage—especially in a double magnum—decanting is highly recommended: give it at least 2–3 hours in a wide decanter to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften, and don’t hesitate to follow it over the course of an evening.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the most revered names in Piedmont and a benchmark for traditional Barolo worldwide. Founded in the early 20th century and elevated to legendary status under Giovanni and later his son Roberto Conterno, the winery is synonymous with meticulous vineyard work, low yields and an unwavering commitment to classic, long-lived Barolo. From crus such as Francia and Cerretta, Conterno crafts wines that are powerful yet precise, built for the cellar and treasured by collectors. Their Barolo bottlings routinely sit among the highest-rated and most sought-after in the region, helping to define the global reputation of Serralunga d’Alba as a source of profound, ageworthy Nebbiolo.
