Description
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of the most revered names in Piedmont, and this 2019 Doppio Magnum (3L) bottling is a monumental expression of Nebbiolo. Produced only in truly exceptional vintages and aged in traditional large casks, Monfortino is often described as an “extra Barolo” for its depth, structure, and extraordinary longevity. First crafted in the 1920s from meticulously selected fruit in Serralunga d’Alba, it has grown into a modern legend of Italian wine and a benchmark for age-worthy Barolo.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Monfortino shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with youthful, ruby reflections at the rim, signaling both concentration and long life ahead. The nose is intensely complex yet still tightly coiled: expect layers of wild cherry, macerated raspberry, and dried rose petal, backed by notes of licorice, blood orange zest, tar, cedar, and hints of tobacco and leather. Mineral undertones and a ferrous, almost saline edge speak clearly of Serralunga’s powerful terroir.
On the palate, this is a monumental, structured Barolo—dense, vertical, and uncompromisingly traditional. Firm, finely etched tannins frame flavors of dark red berries, sour cherry, dried herbs, and spice, gradually revealing notes of balsamic, black tea, and earthy truffle with air. The acidity is brisk and mouthwatering, providing lift and precision to the wine’s considerable power. In 2019, Monfortino shows exceptional balance and energy; while already undeniably impressive, it is built for the long haul. Properly stored, this Doppio Magnum can evolve gracefully for 30–50 years or more, gaining ever greater nuance and harmony over decades.
Production
Monfortino is sourced from top-tier Nebbiolo grown in the heart of Barolo’s Serralunga d’Alba area, historically from the famed Francia vineyard, where poor, calcareous-clay soils and a cooler, breezy exposition yield grapes of remarkable intensity, tannin, and minerality. Harvest is strictly manual, with ruthless selection of only the finest bunches in the vineyard and again at the winery. True to the classic Piedmontese school, the grapes undergo a long, traditional fermentation and maceration on the skins, often extending several weeks, to extract profound structure and aroma complexity. The wine is then aged for extended periods in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing slow, graceful development without overt oak influence. Only in vintages that meet Giacomo Conterno’s exacting standards does a Monfortino Riserva get declared and bottled, making each release a rarity.
Food & Serving
This Barolo Riserva Monfortino demands equally noble cuisine at the table. It is superb with rich Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, and venison, as well as white truffle dishes—tajarin pasta with butter and truffle, risotto with porcini, or simple roasted meats with polenta. Mature hard cheeses like aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno also make a fitting match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 3–4 hours in advance for near-term enjoyment, and even longer if opened in its first decade, especially from this Doppio Magnum format.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate, founded in the early 20th century and based in Monforte d’Alba, is synonymous with the highest echelon of traditional Barolo. Monfortino was first produced in the 1920s as a special cuvée from the best grapes sourced in Serralunga and nearby villages, vinified in a resolutely classic manner to create a Barolo that could age for generations. Over the decades, under the stewardship of Giacomo and then his son Giovanni, the estate became a global reference point for authentic, long-lived Barolo and a guardian of traditional methods. Today, Giacomo Conterno wines regularly achieve top scores and are fiercely pursued by collectors worldwide, with Monfortino Riserva standing as one of Italy’s most iconic and sought-after reds.
