Description

Giacomo Conterno Arione Barolo 2020 in magnum format (1.5 L) showcases the darker, more brooding side of Nebbiolo while retaining the house’s signature precision and finesse. Sourced from the Arione vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this Barolo is all about depth, silken structure and a quietly powerful elegance that reveals itself with time. The 2020 vintage is slightly less dense than some past releases, but gains in refinement, purity of fruit and drinkability over the medium to long term.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Arione Barolo is a deep, luminous garnet with a hint of brick at the rim, suggesting both intensity and classic Nebbiolo transparency. The nose opens on dark-toned fruits—black cherry, plum and blackberry—layered with brambly undergrowth, crushed rose petals, licorice, and a distinctive note of warm, scorched earth that is very true to Serralunga. As it unfolds, brighter accents of sweet red cherry and subtle spice lift the darker core. On the palate, the wine is focused and poised rather than massive, delivering a refined interplay between generous fruit and firmly structured tannins. Flavors of black cherry, blood orange, red currant and dried raspberry are wrapped in nuances of tobacco leaf, tar, graphite and savory herbs. The tannins are polished and impressively glossy, giving a silk-like texture that carries through a long, precise and mineral-driven finish. While approachable with air in its youth—especially in magnum—this Barolo has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers over time.

Production
Arione is a celebrated cru in Serralunga d’Alba, characterized by calcareous clay and marl soils that are rich in limestone, yielding Barolo of notable structure, depth and longevity. Perched on well-exposed slopes, the vines benefit from excellent drainage and a broad diurnal range, which helps preserve Nebbiolo’s aromatic lift and acidity. Grapes are meticulously harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with severe selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final blend. Vinification follows the traditional Conterno approach: a lengthy three-week maceration on the skins with a submerged cap and carefully managed cap work (punch-downs, pump-overs and délestage), a regimen that has remained essentially unchanged for 20–30 years. This patient, low-intervention approach yields a wine of remarkable purity, concentration and textural finesse, typically followed by extended aging in large neutral oak casks to respect the character of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for equally characterful cuisine: think braised veal shank (osso buco), slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roast game birds, or Piedmontese specialties such as tajarin with white truffle, brasato al Barolo and rich mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses like aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, as well as earthy dishes featuring porcini, polenta and root vegetables, are natural partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aromatic complexity and structural clarity. Given its youth and the magnum format, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered, elegant profile.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Barolo, a benchmark estate that has helped define what great, ageworthy Nebbiolo from the Langhe can be. Founded in the early 20th century and long associated with traditional methods—extended maceration, long aging in large Slavonian oak botti and an unwavering focus on terroir expression—the estate has earned a near-mythic reputation among collectors and sommeliers worldwide. From its home base in Monforte d’Alba and key holdings in crus such as Francia and Arione, Conterno produces some of the most sought-after Baroli in Piedmont. Under the guidance of successive generations, the winery has remained steadfastly committed to quality and authenticity, consistently crafting wines that marry power with precision and stand as benchmarks for the region.
