Description
Giacomo Conterno Arione Barolo 2018 in magnum format is a profound expression of Serralunga d’Alba, crafted by one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the Arione cru, a south/southeast-facing site that borders the legendary Francia vineyard, this wine marries classic Barolo structure with remarkable precision and depth. Bottled in 1.5 L, it is designed for extended aging and for those who appreciate Barolo at its most nuanced and ageworthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Arione Barolo 2018 shows a luminous garnet core with a delicate brick-tinged rim, typical of Nebbiolo yet still youthful and vibrant. The nose is refined but intense, unfolding in layers: rose petals, violet, and dried herbs interwoven with red cherry, wild strawberry, blood orange zest, and a darker undercurrent of licorice, tobacco, and subtle tar and iron.
On the palate, this is a tightly coiled, vertical Barolo with the hallmark Serralunga tannic backbone. The attack is precise and savory, showing red currant, sour cherry and pomegranate, followed by more earthy tones of truffle, dried roses, leather and crushed stone. The tannins are firm, fine-grained and persistent, giving the wine both grip and elegance, while the acidity lends lift and clarity to the long, mineral-laced finish. In magnum, the 2018 Arione has excellent aging potential; it will start to drink beautifully after 8–10 years from vintage and can easily evolve for two to three decades under proper cellaring.
Production
Arione is a prestigious cru in Serralunga d’Alba, characterized by calcareous clay and limestone-rich soils that yield Barolo of formidable structure and minerality. The vineyard sits on steep, well-exposed slopes, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and cool nights that preserve aromatic complexity and freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal phenolic ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest Nebbiolo clusters are used. In keeping with Giacomo Conterno’s unwaveringly traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in large wooden vats with extended maceration on the skins to extract depth, tannin and character. The wine is then aged for several years in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing it to develop slowly while preserving purity of fruit and a transparent expression of the Arione terroir, before being bottled with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This is a noble Barolo that shines with equally refined cuisine: think braised veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked beef short ribs, game dishes such as venison or hare, and classic Piedmontese dishes like brasato al Barolo or tajarin with white truffle. Aged hard cheeses, especially Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Pecorino or Castelmagno, also make superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. Decanting is strongly recommended: for a young bottle, 2–3 hours before serving; for older, more mature magnums, a gentle 60–90 minutes is usually sufficient to let the wine open without losing its more delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the defining names of traditional Barolo, founded in the early 20th century and long regarded as a benchmark for ageworthy Nebbiolo. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the family became legendary through their uncompromising, long-lived Baroli, particularly from crus like Francia and Monfortino, wines that helped shape the global reputation of Piedmont as a fine-wine region. Under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, the estate has continued to refine its craft while remaining staunchly classical, carefully expanding its vineyard holdings to include top sites such as Arione. Today, Giacomo Conterno stands as a reference point not only in Barolo but in the world of fine wine, with its bottles sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their purity, authenticity and remarkable capacity to age.
