Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Arione 2017 in magnum format is a commanding, deeply structured expression of Serralunga d’Alba Nebbiolo. Drawn from the prestigious Arione cru, this Barolo marries the natural power of a warm vintage with the precision and purity that define Conterno’s house style. In 2017, Arione shows an especially generous, layered character that has already won admirers over both the 2015 debut and the classic 2016.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Arione Barolo is a deep, luminous garnet with an intense core and subtly brick-tinged rim—already hinting at its noble Nebbiolo heritage. The nose is remarkably expressive and complex: dark cherry and blackcurrant intertwine with notes of blackberry, cola, and licorice root, followed by nuances of crushed stones, iron filings, dried roses, and earthy spice.
On the palate, this is a statement wine—full-bodied yet refined, with impressive concentration and a tightly knit structure. Layers of black fruits, cassis, and wild berries are supported by mineral tones, hints of tar, tobacco leaf, and savory herbs. The tannins are firm, authoritative, and finely grained, playing in harmony with the wine’s rich texture and natural acidity. The warmth of the 2017 vintage gives a plush mid-palate, but the finish remains long, dry, and poised, suggesting excellent aging potential. In magnum, this Barolo is built for the long haul and should evolve beautifully for 20–30 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Arione is a revered cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its compact, limestone-rich marl soils and sun-drenched exposures that naturally produce powerful, structured Barolo. The vines here tap deep into mineral subsoils, giving wines with both intensity and a pronounced, almost iron-like minerality. Giacomo Conterno works traditionally and meticulously in the vineyard, with careful hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve balance in a warm year like 2017. In the cellar, the Nebbiolo is vinified using classic, slow fermentations and extended macerations to extract depth, structure, and character, followed by long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks. This patient, old-school approach allows the cru and vintage to speak clearly, without cosmetic winemaking influences.
Food & Serving
Barolo Arione 2017 is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its structure. Think braised beef short ribs, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, or wild boar ragù over fresh tajarin. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino, or well-aged alpine cheeses also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its youth and structure, especially in magnum, decant for 2–3 hours before serving if opened in the near term; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or simply allowing it to open slowly in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the undisputed icons of Barolo and a benchmark for traditionally crafted Nebbiolo in Piedmont. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate rose to fame with its legendary Monfortino, a wine that helped define what long-lived, ageworthy Barolo could be. Today, under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, the domaine farms some of the region’s most coveted crus, including Francia and Arione, crafting wines that are both profoundly classic and remarkably precise. With a steadfast commitment to low yields, careful vineyard work, and long aging in large casks, Giacomo Conterno has secured its reputation as a reference point not only in Serralunga d’Alba, but in the wider world of fine wine.
