Description

Giacomo Borgogno Langhe Nebbiolo No Name 2023 is a characterful red wine that began as a “protest wine” and quickly won admiration for its elegance, depth, and accessibility. Made from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the Langhe, it offers the classic soul of Piedmont in a more immediate, approachable style, while carrying the weight of one of Italy’s most historic cellars. Its tongue-in-cheek name reflects a broader conversation about bureaucracy in wine and agriculture, giving the bottle both substance and a sense of purpose.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the pale garnet hue typical of Nebbiolo, with bright transparency and a refined, polished look. The bouquet is expressive and layered, with notes of red cherry, dried rose, wild berries, spice, and a subtle earthy lift that brings extra complexity. On the palate, it is dry, lively, and finely structured, balancing supple fruit with the grape’s signature tannins and acidity. The finish is long and graceful, with enough depth to make it rewarding now, while also giving it the potential to develop beautifully over the next several years.

Production
This DOC Langhe Nebbiolo is made in Piedmont from carefully selected Nebbiolo vines in the Langhe, an area known for its calcareous soils and ideal conditions for producing wines of finesse and structure. The wine is vinified traditionally in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity of fruit, then aged for around three years in large oak casks to build texture, complexity, and harmony without overpowering the varietal character.

Food & Serving
A versatile food wine, it pairs naturally with Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, vitello tonnato, mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, and braised meats. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Giacomo Borgogno e Figli is one of Piedmont’s most historic producers, with deep roots in Barolo’s winemaking tradition. The estate is especially significant for its role in Italian history: a Borgogno Barolo was served at the 1861 lunch celebrating the unification of Italy, and another was opened for Tsar Nicholas II during an official visit to Racconigi Castle. Acquired by the Farinetti family in 2008, the winery was carefully restored while maintaining its longstanding identity, continuing a legacy of heritage, innovation, and excellence.

This wine is a conversation-starter. The wine "No Name" has many different stories, and you could discuss them all during dinner. It's both a sort of protest for the strict rules of the Barolo appellation and a fun way to name a wine that does its own thing. And it sure is good!
