Description
Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Fossati 2020 is a single-vineyard Barolo born from the estate’s youngest cru, Fossati, in the commune of Barolo. Since 2008 this site has been known for giving particularly floral and fruit-driven expressions of Nebbiolo, and the 2020 vintage captures that character with striking clarity. Aged for an extended period in carefully chosen casks, it delivers an elegant, fragrant and finely balanced Barolo that feels inviting even in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Barolo Fossati 2020 shows a luminous garnet-red core with brick-tinged highlights just beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose is highly expressive and lifted, with aromas of rose petals, violet, wild strawberries and red cherries, layered with hints of blood orange, licorice, sweet spices and a subtle undercurrent of tobacco and dried herbs.
On the palate, this is a poised and graceful Barolo, emphasizing finesse over sheer power. The attack is juicy and vibrant, with crunchy red fruit, pomegranate and cherry compote framed by fine-grained but clearly present Nebbiolo tannins. Notes of anise, delicate tar, dried rose and a touch of balsamic complexity unfold with air, while the acidity keeps everything fresh and linear. The finish is long, fragrant and silky, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, it will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 10–18 years.
Production
Fossati is a prized cru in the Barolo commune, characterized by calcareous marl with sandy components and good drainage, sitting at mid-slope elevations with excellent sun exposure—conditions ideal for producing aromatic, refined Nebbiolo. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, perfectly ripe clusters. In keeping with Borgogno’s traditionalist philosophy, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts and an extended maceration to extract structure and nuance, followed by a long maturation of around four years in the estate’s classic large oak casks (the “smaller” barrels in Borgogno’s cellar context). This patient élevage allows the cru character of Fossati and the varietal purity of Nebbiolo to take center stage, without excessive oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs wonderfully with refined Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin pasta with butter and white truffle, braised veal or beef (brasato al Barolo), roast lamb, and game birds. It also complements richly flavored mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large Burgundy-style stemware. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving will help soften the tannins and open up the wine’s floral and spicy bouquet, especially in its first decade of life.
Producer
Founded in 1761, Giacomo Borgogno e Figli is one of Barolo’s oldest and most historically significant producers, often cited as a benchmark for traditional, cellar-worthy Barolo. The estate has long championed classic methods—long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak casks and minimal intervention—helping to define the style that brought international recognition to the Barolo region. Today, Borgogno farms its vineyards with increasing emphasis on sustainability and respect for terroir, crafting wines that marry authenticity and longevity with a more polished, accessible expression in crus like Fossati.
