Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod’s Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2013 is a beautifully poised expression of Pinot Noir from one of the most admired climats in Burgundy. Sourced from the limestone- and clay-rich Les Cras vineyard, this is a wine prized for its finesse, mineral drive, and quiet intensity. The cool 2013 vintage adds freshness and precision, making it a compelling example of Chambolle-Musigny elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the translucent ruby hue typical of fine Burgundy, with a bright, youthful edge. The nose opens with ripe red cherry and raspberry, then layers in violet, forest floor, spice, and a subtle stony note that speaks to the vineyard’s terroir.
The palate is refined and lively, with fresh acidity carrying delicate red-fruit flavors and a supple, silky tannin structure. It finishes long and mineral, with enough depth to develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years, though it is already highly appealing for those who enjoy Burgundy’s more graceful, aromatic style.
Production
Les Cras is a prized Premier Cru site in Chambolle-Musigny, where limestone and clay soils contribute both structure and a distinctly mineral character. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully sorted to preserve purity and quality in a challenging vintage. Fermentation followed a classic Burgundian approach with native yeasts, before maturation in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak to add subtle complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with dishes that complement Pinot Noir’s elegance, such as roast duck, quail, veal, mushroom risotto, or game birds. It is best served slightly cool, around 15–16°C, and can be enjoyed without decanting, although a brief airing may help the aromas open up if the bottle has been recently opened.
