Description
Ghislaine Barthod’s Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru 2009 is a beautifully poised Burgundy that captures the finesse and depth of one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most admired premier cru sites. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it combines the richness of the outstanding 2009 vintage with the precision and elegance for which Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is known.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the classic refinement of Chambolle-Musigny: bright ruby color with depth and vibrancy. The nose opens with layers of ripe cherry, strawberry, and red currant, lifted by floral notes, subtle spice, and a distinct mineral edge from the vineyard’s limestone soils.
On the palate, the wine is silky yet concentrated, with supple tannins, lively acidity, and a rounded, generous fruit profile. There is real balance here between richness and freshness, finishing long, savory, and refined. While already expressive, this 2009 still has excellent aging potential and should continue to develop complexity over the next 10–20 years.
Production
The Les Charmes vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny is prized for its limestone-rich soils, which help shape wines of elegance, perfume, and fine structure. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected, then vinified using traditional methods with native yeasts to preserve the character of the site and vintage. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, adding subtle texture, spice, and depth without overpowering the Pinot Noir.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for duck breast, roast quail, mushroom dishes, veal, or game birds such as pigeon or pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with creamy cheeses and dishes featuring earthy flavors like truffles or wild mushrooms. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently for 30–60 minutes if opening young, though older bottles may only need a brief aeration.
