Description
Ghislaine Barthod’s Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Baudes 2005 Magnum is a beautifully poised Burgundy that captures everything collectors love about great Pinot Noir: finesse, depth, and a distinctly mineral-edged elegance. From one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most respected domaines and a standout 2005 vintage, it offers both immediate charm and the structure to evolve gracefully over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the graceful transparency typical of fine Chambolle-Musigny, with a bright ruby core that hints at its mature complexity. The nose is seductively layered, opening with ripe red cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant, then unfolding into violet, spice, and a subtle earthy note.
On the palate, it is deep and concentrated without losing its signature refinement, with silky tannins, lively acidity, and a long, elegant finish. The limestone-driven minerality of Les Baudes adds a cool, precise dimension that keeps the wine lifted and focused. Drinking beautifully now, it should continue to develop additional nuance over the next 10–15 years.
Production
Les Baudes is a Premier Cru vineyard in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, where limestone-rich soils help produce Pinot Noir of striking perfume, delicacy, and precision. The 2005 vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions in Burgundy, with a warm, sunny summer that allowed the grapes to reach full ripeness while retaining balance and freshness. The fruit was harvested by hand, then vinified traditionally with natural fermentation before aging in French oak barrels to build texture, complexity, and structure.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal wine for refined dishes such as roast duck, pan-seared pigeon, veal tenderloin, game birds, or mushroom-based cuisine. It also works wonderfully with truffled dishes, aged Comté, or a simple roast chicken with herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently for about 30–60 minutes if opening now to allow the aromatics to fully unfold.
