Description

G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera 2018 is a poised, classical Barolo that marries intensity with elegance. Sourced from the celebrated Ravera cru in Novello, it showcases Nebbiolo at its most refined: deeply structured, yet lifted by vibrant fruit and fine, silky tannins. This is a Barolo built not only for immediate fascination, but for decades of graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Ravera shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, typical of fine Nebbiolo. The nose opens with a generous spectrum of red and dark fruits—fresh cherry, plum and wild raspberry—wrapped in notes of rose petals, violet, and a distinct mineral edge. Subtle layers of sweet spice, licorice, dried herbs and a hint of underbrush emerge with air, giving the wine both depth and complexity. On the palate, this Barolo is at once elegant and powerful. The fruit profile leans toward ripe cherries, dark plums and macerated berries, supported by warm spice and a fine, stony minerality that reflects its Ravera origins. The tannins are beautifully integrated: firm yet silk-smooth, providing a strong backbone without harshness. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and long on the finish, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice and mineral. While already harmonious, this 2018 clearly has a long life ahead; it will reward careful cellaring over 10–20+ years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and additional textural polish.

Production
Ravera is one of Barolo’s most revered crus, an amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in Novello with excellent exposure and well-draining Tortonian sandstone-clay soils. This terroir gives Nebbiolo both aromatic finesse and a pronounced mineral character, as well as the structure necessary for long aging. G.D. Vajra is known for meticulous, hands-on viticulture: low yields, careful canopy management and selective harvesting, often done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. In the winery, fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel with extended maceration to gently extract aromatics, color and tannin. Aging is conducted in large oak casks, allowing the wine to develop complexity and texture without overwhelming the purity of fruit or the distinctive mineral profile that defines Ravera.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb, or game birds with truffle and wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside mature hard cheeses, porcini risotto and deeply flavored ragùs over fresh egg pasta. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open fully; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
G.D. Vajra is a family-run estate based in the village of Barolo, renowned for its combination of traditional craftsmanship and sensitive, vineyard-focused winemaking. Founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vaira, the winery was something of a pioneer in championing high-altitude vineyards and a purist approach to Nebbiolo at a time when Barolo’s reputation was still rebuilding. Today, G.D. Vajra is considered one of the leading names in the region, crafting wines that are consistently praised for their elegance, precision and authenticity. Their work in sites like Ravera has helped underscore the importance of single-vineyard bottlings in Barolo, and they are widely respected for producing age-worthy wines that remain accessible and beautifully balanced throughout their lives.
