Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bricco delle Viole shows a radiant, transparent ruby-garnet color typical of top Nebbiolo from high-altitude sites. The nose is strikingly aromatic, with dried violets and lilacs, sour cherry, cranberry, lavender essence and hints of rosemary and Mediterranean herbs all weaving together in a delicate, yet clearly defined bouquet. On the palate, this Barolo is dry and finely structured, with powdery, refined tannins that give a medium weight and a lean, elegant mid-palate. Tart red berries, blood orange, pomegranate and subtle spice unfold gradually, supported by vivid acidity that keeps everything focused and fresh. Bricco delle Viole is one of Barolo’s highest and coolest vineyard sites, perched in the commune of Barolo on limestone-rich marl soils that enhance aromatic purity and finesse. The combination of altitude, significant diurnal swings and well-drained, calcareous terrain gives Nebbiolo grapes exceptional acidity, fragrance and structure. At G.D. Vajra, the fruit is typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and careful berry selection. In the cellar, the wine is vinified traditionally, with gentle fermentations and extended macerations to extract fine tannins and nuanced aromatics, followed by aging in large neutral oak casks to preserve the vineyard’s signature elegance and clarity of fruit.

Food & Serving
This Barolo shines alongside refined dishes that respect its delicacy and structure: think veal or lamb with simple jus, truffle-inflected risotto, mushroom tagliatelle, roasted game birds, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the aromatic spectrum to fully express itself. A gentle decant of 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles will require less aeration and more careful handling.
