Description
G.D. Vajra’s Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2019 in magnum format captures the very essence of high-elevation Barolo: perfumed, radiant and deeply refined. Awarded 97+ points by Jeb Dunnuck, this is widely considered one of the finest wines ever produced by Vajra, combining classical structure with striking elegance. From one of Barolo’s most celebrated crus, it marries the purity of Nebbiolo with the unique character of the Bricco delle Viole vineyard, a site long prized for its late-ripening fruit and luminous, floral style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Bricco delle Viole shows a jewel-like garnet core with lifted, translucent edges—typical of great Nebbiolo from high-altitude sites. The nose is intensely fragrant and complex, opening with fresh rose petals, violets and wild herbs before revealing notes of red cherries, raspberries, blood orange, licorice and a delicate hint of mint and spice.
On the palate, the wine is Burgundian in its poise and texture: silky yet firmly structured, with incredibly fine, present tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Flavors of red berry, pomegranate, sweet tobacco, anise and dried flowers unfold in layers, carried by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity and a very long, graceful finish. Already harmonious and surprisingly approachable in its youth, the wine in magnum has significant aging potential; it should evolve beautifully from 2025 and continue to gain complexity through 2045 and beyond.
Production
Bricco delle Viole is one of Barolo’s highest and coolest crus, perched on the hills west of the village of Barolo in the heart of Piedmont. The vineyard sits on Sant’Agata marl rich in fossils, which lends finesse, aromatic lift and a distinct mineral tension to the wine. Farmed organically, the vines are tended and harvested by hand, with careful selection of bunches to capture the slow, even ripening that characterized the 2019 vintage. In the cellar, G.D. Vajra follows a traditional yet sensitive approach: gentle, long macerations to extract fine tannins and aromatic nuance, followed by extended aging in large neutral casks, allowing Nebbiolo’s character and the terroir of Bricco delle Viole to shine without excessive oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as braised veal or beef, osso buco, truffle risotto, mushroom-based pastas, roasted game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Its aromatic delicacy and structured palate also complement dishes featuring porcini, truffle and root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both perfume and finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine unfurl its floral and spice notes; as it ages, a shorter decant will suffice mainly to separate it from any natural sediment.
Producer
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s benchmark family estates, renowned for uniting traditional craftsmanship with a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach. Founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vajra, the winery was an early champion of conscientious, vineyard-focused farming in a period when many were chasing power over finesse. Today the family—Aldo, Milena and their children—oversees some of the region’s most prized sites, including Bricco delle Viole, and has earned a reputation for producing Barolo of striking purity, aromatic complexity and timeless elegance. Consistently acclaimed by international critics, G.D. Vajra plays a key role in defining the modern classic style of Barolo, rooted firmly in its historic hillsides while remaining finely attuned to changing vintages and climate.
