Description
Gaja Barbaresco 2017 is a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most celebrated names. Sourced from 14 distinct vineyards around Barbaresco and Treiso, it captures the depth, precision, and elegance that have made Barbaresco the signature wine of the Gaja family for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the classic pale ruby hue of Nebbiolo, with a graceful transparency that hints at its structure and finesse. The nose is layered and refined, offering red cherry, wild berry, rose petal, and dried herbs, with subtle notes of spice, earth, and wood.
The palate is poised and vibrant, with bright acidity, firm tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish. The blend of parcels brings remarkable balance and complexity, giving the wine both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve beautifully over time. It has excellent aging potential and will continue to gain depth and nuance with bottle age.
Production
Made entirely from Nebbiolo grown in 14 vineyards across Barbaresco and Treiso, the wine reflects a careful mosaic of sites at 250–330 meters above sea level. The vines average around 40 years of age, and the very low yields contribute concentration and intensity. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, with fermentation in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation and 12 months of maturation in 225-liter barriques before blending and an additional 12 months in large oak casks (botti).
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for classic Piedmont dishes such as truffle risotto, tajarin with meat sauce, roasted veal, braised beef, game birds, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours when young to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential wine estates and a defining force in Barbaresco. Across generations, the family has helped elevate the region’s reputation internationally, combining tradition with precision viticulture and modern cellar practices. Their Barbaresco remains the estate’s most important wine and one of the most recognized expressions of Nebbiolo in the world.
