Description
Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a refined, classically styled Brunello that marries dark, concentrated fruit with a sense of lifted elegance. It stands out for its beautiful balance between richness and savoury complexity, offering a wine that is both immediately captivating and clearly built to age. This vintage continues Fuligni’s long-standing reputation as one of Montalcino’s benchmark traditional estates, showcasing the full potential of Sangiovese in this historic Tuscan hill town.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, lustrous ruby core with garnet highlights forming at the rim, hinting at both concentration and classic structure. The nose opens with dark cherry and black plum, quickly joined by savoury notes of tobacco leaf, cigar ash and subtle leather. With air, more delicate layers emerge: dried rose petals, hibiscus, a whisper of Mediterranean herbs and a fine mineral accent that adds lift.
On the palate, the wine is poised and beautifully textured, with a firm yet polished backbone. Ripe dark fruits – black cherry, morello and wild berries – are wrapped in notes of cocoa powder, tobacco and a touch of spice. The tannins are dusty and finely grained, lending a tactile, almost chalky feel that carries through to the long, persistent finish. Acidity is vibrant but seamlessly integrated, giving the wine both definition and freshness. This 2019 has excellent aging potential: while already approachable with proper aeration, it will develop greater complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 10–20 years in a good cellar.
Production
Sourced from Fuligni’s estate vineyards on the eastern side of Montalcino, this Brunello is born from classic Tuscan terroir: stony, marl and galestro-rich soils at higher elevations that encourage slow, even ripening and naturally high acidity in Sangiovese. Harvesting is typically carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified as pure Sangiovese, with a controlled fermentation and a maceration long enough to extract structure and aromatic depth without sacrificing finesse. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian and/or French oak casks, allowing it to evolve slowly and harmoniously, enhancing the savoury, floral and mineral elements that are hallmarks of Fuligni’s style.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is superb with classic Tuscan-inspired dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, wild boar ragù, roast lamb with rosemary, or rich mushroom and truffle dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both the fruit and the more delicate floral and savoury notes. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful service from the bottle will be sufficient.
Producer
The Fuligni estate, with roots in Montalcino dating back to the early 20th century, is considered one of the region’s most respected and consistently high-performing Brunello producers. Situated on the prized eastern slopes of Montalcino, the winery has long favoured a traditional approach, focusing on terroir expression, moderate yields and classic large-cask aging. Over the decades, Fuligni has helped shape the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino as one of Italy’s great age-worthy reds, regularly earning acclaim from international critics and collectors for wines that combine depth, elegance and unmistakable regional character.
