Description
Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #9 2005 is a benchmark Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most revered steep-slope vineyards. This is a richly textured, late-harvest Riesling that marries opulent fruit with precise acidity, capturing the unique character of the iconic Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr site in an outstanding vintage. Bottled under the specific A.P. #9 designation, it reflects a carefully selected portion of the harvest with exceptional ripeness and purity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 Auslese shows a pale golden hue that hints at both youthfulness and concentration. The nose is delicate yet expressive, with notes of white peach, ripe stone fruit and clove, layered over subtle hints of crushed herbs and a whisper of savory complexity. It’s aromatically refined rather than showy, inviting you back to the glass.
On the palate, this wine is rich and juicy, featuring an almost nectar-like peach character that feels lush but never heavy. A fine, well-judged acidity runs through the core, keeping the sweetness in check and providing a beautiful sense of balance. Creamy vanilla custard tones and a distinct salty, slate-driven minerality emerge on the long, persistent finish. Already highly enjoyable, this Auslese from a great vintage has the structure to age gracefully for decades, gaining further complexity, honeyed depth and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from the famed Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard on the steep, south-facing slate slopes of the Mosel, this Riesling benefits from optimal sun exposure and heat retention from the dark slate soils, which impart the region’s signature minerality and elegance. The vines are traditionally tended and harvested by hand, allowing for meticulous selection of late-harvest, botrytis-affected berries at Auslese ripeness. After a gentle pressing, the must is slowly fermented—typically in stainless steel or large, neutral old casks—at cool temperatures to preserve aromatics and capture the interplay of sweetness and acidity. The result is a wine that expresses both the terroir’s precision and the vintage’s richness, with the A.P. #9 bottling representing a particularly choice selection.
Food & Serving
This Auslese is a superb partner for refined desserts such as fruit tarts with peach or apricot, crème brûlée, panna cotta with stone fruits, or delicate almond pastries. It also shines with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, and with spicy Asian dishes where sweetness and acidity balance heat and aromatics. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its freshness and lift. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving and letting it warm slightly in the glass will allow the wine’s aromatics and complexity to unfold fully.
