Description

Frescobaldi Rosso di Montalcino Campo ai Sassi 2024 offers a vibrant, earlier‑drinking expression of Montalcino’s famed Sangiovese. Sharing the same noble grape and hillside terroir as Brunello, it delivers many of the region’s classic traits in a more approachable and youthful style. Crafted from younger vines at the historic Castelgiocondo estate, this Rosso balances elegance, fragrance and purity of fruit with softer, more accessible tannins.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Campo ai Sassi 2024 shows a bright, medium ruby hue with clear, lively reflections that underline its youth. The nose is immediately inviting, with aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and pomegranate, layered with notes of violet, dried herbs, a hint of blood orange and a subtle touch of sweet spice from oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied and energetic, driven by crisp Sangiovese acidity and fine, polished tannins. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry and plum are supported by hints of thyme, tobacco leaf and a delicate mineral edge that speaks of its Montalcino origins. The finish is clean and savory, with a pleasant, gently drying grip that encourages another sip. While primarily crafted for enjoyment in its youth, this 2024 Rosso di Montalcino has the structure to evolve nicely over the next 3–6 years, gaining additional complexity while retaining its fresh, lifted character.

Production
Campo ai Sassi is sourced from younger Sangiovese vines planted on the slopes around the Castelgiocondo estate in Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (crumbly marl), clay and limestone soils, combined with altitude and cooling breezes, promotes slow, even ripening and vibrant acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at peak maturity. In the cellar, the fruit is gently destemmed and fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks to preserve aromatic freshness and varietal purity, with maceration tailored to extract color and fine tannins without excessive hardness. The wine then matures for a shorter period than Brunello, often in a combination of large oak casks and/or used barriques, allowing it to retain its youthful fruit while gaining subtle spice and texture before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Rosso di Montalcino is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with Tuscan classics such as pappardelle with ragù, grilled pork or lamb, roasted chicken with herbs, and aged pecorino. It also works well with tomato‑based pasta dishes, pizza with cured meats, and mushroom risotto. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. A brief decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and red‑fruit notes, especially in its first couple of years, but it can also be enjoyed simply poured and allowed to evolve in the glass.

Producer
Campo ai Sassi is produced at Tenuta Castelgiocondo, one of the historic Montalcino estates owned by Marchesi Frescobaldi, a family whose winegrowing roots in Tuscany date back over 700 years. Castelgiocondo was among the earliest properties to embrace Brunello di Montalcino, helping to shape the reputation of this hilltop appellation as a benchmark for world‑class Sangiovese. Today, under the Frescobaldi umbrella, the estate is recognized for its meticulous vineyard management, its focus on expressing terroir, and a portfolio that ranges from ageworthy Brunello to more approachable wines like Campo ai Sassi. Their work has contributed significantly to the global profile of Montalcino and to Tuscany’s standing as one of the great wine regions of Italy.
