Description

Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1976 is a rare Rheingau treasure and a superb example of one of Germany’s most celebrated sweet wine styles. Made from exceptionally concentrated Riesling grapes, it offers remarkable richness, finesse, and historic appeal from an outstanding vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting both maturity and its natural concentration. The bouquet is intense and layered, with aromas of ripe stone fruit, honey, warm spice, and a subtle mineral edge that adds lift and complexity. On the palate, it is opulent and luscious, yet beautifully balanced by vibrant Riesling acidity. The sweetness is generous but never heavy, leading into a long, persistent finish with a fine mineral nuance. With its structure and balance, it remains a compelling wine to enjoy now, while still showing the kind of depth and concentration that has helped top Trockenbeerenauslesen age gracefully for decades.

Production
This wine comes from Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen in the Rheingau, a respected vineyard site known for producing elegant, mineral-driven Riesling. The Trockenbeerenauslese classification indicates that the grapes were selected berry by berry at extreme ripeness, likely affected by noble rot, to achieve exceptional sugar concentration and aromatic complexity. Vinification would have focused on preserving purity and balance, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to shine through.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to best express its aromatic richness without muting freshness. It is excellent with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheese, or as a luxurious standalone aperitif. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief opening before serving can help the wine reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern is a historic Rheingau estate associated with traditional winemaking and a strong reputation for Riesling. The producer is part of the region’s long noble wine heritage, where precision and site expression have long been central values. Over the years, the estate has been recognized for wines that reflect the character of its vineyards and the classic style of the Rheingau.
