Description

The Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Auslese 1949 is a rare Rheingau treasure from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from carefully selected grapes and now beautifully mature, it combines the nobility of the Riesling grape with the depth and elegance that only a great old vintage can offer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden-yellow color, a clear sign of its age and concentration. The nose is richly layered with ripe stone fruit, honey, and subtle spice, while the palate is full-bodied, complex, and remarkably well balanced, with sweetness held in check by vibrant Riesling acidity. The finish is long, graceful, and refined, leaving behind lingering notes of fruit and honeyed complexity. This is a wine with excellent aging pedigree, and its maturity already offers tremendous pleasure, though well-stored bottles may continue to evolve beautifully.

Production
This wine comes from Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen in the Rheingau, a region known for producing some of Germany’s finest Rieslings on steep, sun-exposed vineyards along the Rhine. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected to produce an Auslese of exceptional quality, with vinification focused on preserving the balance between natural richness and freshness.

Food & Serving
Ideal with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheese, or aged hard cheeses, this Riesling also shines on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Serve slightly chilled, around 8-10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a gentle opening before serving can help the aromas unfold in older bottles.

Producer
Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern is a respected historic producer in the Rheingau, a name associated with traditional German winemaking and premium Riesling. The estate is recognized for its long-standing contribution to the region’s reputation and for crafting wines from distinguished sites such as Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen.
