Description

Fred Prinz Riesling Jungfer GG 2017 is a benchmark dry Rheingau Riesling from one of the region’s most exciting modern talents. Sourced from the esteemed Jungfer vineyard and crafted under certified organic practices, this Grosses Gewächs marries precision, intensity and elegance in a truly classic style. It stands out for its crystalline purity of fruit and finely etched minerality, reflecting both meticulous vineyard work and a gifted winemaker at the helm.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Jungfer GG shows a pale lemon colour with green highlights, hinting at both freshness and youth despite its maturity. The nose is refined and detailed: ripe lime and lemon zest mingle with white peach, green apple, and a touch of mirabelle, layered over notes of wet stone, subtle herbs and a delicate floral lift of white blossom. On the palate, this is taut, dry and focused, with a firm backbone of acidity that carries the flavours long and clean. Citrus and stone fruit are joined by hints of grapefruit pith, crushed slate and a gentle saline edge, giving the wine a precise, almost chiselled profile. The texture is both silky and vibrant, with great balance between concentration and finesse. 2017 is a structured, ageworthy vintage in the Rheingau, and this wine has excellent aging potential: over the next 8–15 years it will develop more complexity, gaining notes of honey, wax and gentle petrol while retaining its mineral core.

Production
The Jungfer Grosses Gewächs comes from the renowned Hallgartener Jungfer vineyard in the Rheingau, a high-quality site with steep, well-drained slopes and soils rich in slate and quartzite. This terroir naturally restricts yields and lends a pronounced mineral character to the Riesling. Fred Prinz has farmed organically since 2013, practising strict green harvesting in August to reduce yields and concentrate flavour in the remaining grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are selected for the GG. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: gentle pressing, slow, cool fermentations—often in stainless steel and/or large traditional vessels—and extended lees contact to build texture and complexity, all while preserving the wine’s precision and purity.

Food & Serving
This dry Rheingau Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, excelling with refined seafood dishes such as scallops, poached turbot, grilled trout or sushi and sashimi. It’s equally impressive with light poultry, veal, or pork in citrus- or herb-driven sauces, and it pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine where ginger, lemongrass or mild chilli heat are in play. Semi-hard and soft cheeses—especially goat’s cheese and young Comté—also make excellent companions. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail; for current drinking, decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its layers, particularly if enjoyed on the younger side.

Producer
Fred Prinz belongs to the new generation of ambitious German winegrowers who have helped elevate dry Riesling to world-class status. Based in the Rheingau, the Prinz estate has pursued quality with unwavering focus, converting to organic viticulture in 2013 and adopting rigorous yield control and green harvesting to produce highly concentrated, pure wines. Fred’s meticulous approach in both vineyard and cellar has earned him consistently high critical acclaim, including rare top scores such as 100 points from James Suckling for one of his Riesling Auslesen. Today, Weingut Prinz is regarded as one of the leading modern estates in the Rheingau, known for Rieslings that combine depth, precision and terroir expression at the highest level.
