Description
Fred Prinz Rheingau Riesling 2024 is a textbook example of a classic dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most historic regions. Crafted to showcase purity, precision and vibrant fruit, it’s a wine that feels both refreshingly modern and deeply rooted in Rheingau tradition. This cuvée puts Riesling’s aromatic intensity and racy structure front and center, making it ideal for those who love crisp, focused white wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Rheingau Riesling is pale straw with green reflections, signaling its youthful freshness. The nose is dry, aromatic and lightly spicy, with vivid notes of lime zest, lemon and crunchy green apple, layered with hints of ripe pear, acacia honey and a touch of white flowers and wet stone.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and finely etched, driven by a bright, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of green and yellow apple, ripe pear and citrus—lime and lemon—are joined by subtle tropical nuances and a gentle honeyed accent that adds roundness without sweetness. The finish is clean, refreshing and mineral, making this a highly versatile food wine. Enjoy it now for its crisp, primary fruit, or over the next 3–5 years as the aromatics gain a bit more complexity and develop classic Riesling nuance.
Production
This Riesling is sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the Rheingau, a region famed for its steep slopes, slate- and quartz-rich soils and cool climate that allows Riesling to ripen slowly while retaining its hallmark acidity. Fred Prinz has worked organically since the 2013 vintage, practicing rigorous canopy management and “green” harvesting in August, where part of the crop is removed to reduce yields and concentrate flavor in the remaining grapes. The fruit is harvested with great care to preserve freshness, then vinified in stainless steel tanks to protect the grape’s pure, varietal character. Fermentation and aging in steel keep the wine precise, linear and fruit-driven, with no influence from oak, allowing the terroir and Riesling’s natural aromatics to shine.
Food & Serving
This Rheingau Riesling is a natural partner for seafood of all kinds—think grilled fish, oysters, mussels and shellfish—as well as roast or grilled chicken and lighter white-meat dishes. Its vibrant acidity and aromatic profile also make it excellent with spicy and aromatic Asian cuisine, such as Thai curries, Vietnamese dishes or sushi with a bit of heat, and it pairs beautifully with creamy, aromatic cheeses, especially washed-rind and bloomy-rind styles. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or giving it a quick splash in a carafe will help the aromas open up.
Producer
Fred Prinz belongs to the new generation of ambitious German winegrowers who are pushing quality to new heights while working closely with nature. Based in the Rheingau, his estate has been farmed organically since 2013, with a strong focus on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and precise expression of Riesling. Green harvesting, strict selection and careful, minimalist winemaking have earned Prinz considerable acclaim, including rare 100-point scores from critic James Suckling for one of his Riesling Auslesen. Today, Weingut Fred Prinz is regarded as one of the estates to watch in the Rheingau, known for producing intensely pure, terroir-driven Rieslings that combine concentration with finesse.
