Description
Fred Prinz Jungfer Auslese 2015 (0.375 L) is a beautifully concentrated, late-harvest Riesling from one of Rheingau’s most prized vineyards. Crafted in a luscious, sweet style, it balances opulent fruit with the laser-like acidity that has made German Riesling legendary. In a convenient half-bottle, it’s perfect for sharing at the end of a meal or for those special, smaller celebrations. This Auslese showcases Fred Prinz’s commitment to organic farming and meticulous vineyard work, resulting in remarkably pure, focused wines. The Jungfer site is renowned for producing Rieslings of finesse and precision, and in Prinz’s hands it reveals both depth and elegant sweetness. His wines have earned outstanding critical acclaim, including rare 100-point scores for his Riesling Auslesen, underlining the world‑class status of this style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Jungfer Auslese shows a bright, luminous golden hue that hints at both maturity and richness. The viscosity is evident as it clings to the sides of the glass, signaling its concentration and sweetness.
The nose is intensely aromatic, with layers of ripe apricot, peach compote, candied citrus peel, and juicy pineapple, interwoven with honey, blossom, and a touch of slatey minerality. Delicate notes of lime zest and herbal nuances add lift and complexity.
On the palate, this is rich yet incredibly precise: succulent stone fruit, baked apple, and exotic notes of mango and passion fruit are balanced by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Honeyed nuances, a whisper of botrytis spice, and a fine, salty-mineral backbone keep the sweetness in perfect check, leading to a long, lingering finish that is both refreshing and indulgent. The texture is silky and layered, with a lightness that belies its concentration.
A 2015 Auslese from a top Rheingau site has excellent aging potential. Expect it to develop beautifully over 15–25 years from vintage, gaining notes of dried apricot, marmalade, caramelized citrus, and classic mature Riesling petrol tones, while the structure and acidity will keep it vibrant and alive.
Production
The Jungfer vineyard in the Rheingau is renowned for its steep slopes, excellent sun exposure, and mineral-rich soils, which together foster Rieslings of precision, aromatic intensity, and fine structure. Fred Prinz farms his vineyards organically, with strict yield control and “green harvest” in August, where a portion of the grape clusters is removed to ensure greater concentration in the remaining fruit. The Auslese designation means that the grapes are harvested late, often berry‑by‑berry selection of very ripe, sometimes botrytized clusters, to achieve heightened sweetness and complexity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatics and purity, followed by maturation in stainless steel or neutral vessels to let the vineyard character and Riesling fruit speak clearly, without heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Jungfer Auslese is a superb companion to rich, refined desserts and savory-sweet combinations. Pair it with fruit tarts (apricot, peach, or apple), crème brûlée, lemon tart, or blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, where the sweetness and acidity cut beautifully through the salt and cream. It also shines alongside spicy Asian dishes—think lightly spicy Thai or Vietnamese cuisine—where its sweetness tames heat while the acidity keeps the pairing lively. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is usually not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass to open up will reward you with additional layers of aroma.
