Description
Franz Keller Enselberg Spätburgunder Premier Cru 2023 is a finely judged Pinot Noir from one of Kaiserstuhl’s most iconic sites, where volcanic and tuf-rich soils give the wine its distinctive mineral edge and cool precision. Crafted in a style that balances depth, tension, and elegance, it reflects the best of Baden Spätburgunder with a Burgundian sense of finesse and a clearly German identity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear, vibrant ruby tone. The nose unfolds with layers of raspberry, red cherry, cranberry, forest floor, gentle smoke, subtle spice, and wet stone, giving the wine an immediately lifted and energetic profile.
On the palate, the 2023 vintage is compact and tightly structured, yet carried by a silky texture and vivid freshness. Fine-grained tannins, cool acidity, and a mineral core reminiscent of tuff, graphite, and chalk lead into a long, precise finish with a slightly balsamic freshness. It has excellent aging potential and will continue to gain complexity over the coming years.
Production
Enselberg is a steep, dramatic vineyard site in Kaiserstuhl, shaped by volcanic and tuf-rich soils that naturally bring intensity, lift, and mineral definition to the fruit. The wine is spontaneously fermented, partly with whole clusters, and matured in high-quality barriques to build structure and complexity while preserving purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine for dishes with depth and finesse, such as roast duck, quail, venison, mushroom risotto, or salmon with earthy accompaniments. Serve it slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if enjoyed young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Franz Keller is one of Baden’s most respected producers, known for precision-driven wines that highlight the character of Kaiserstuhl’s exceptional vineyards. The estate has earned a strong reputation for Spätburgunder of outstanding quality, especially from top sites like Enselberg, and is widely regarded as a benchmark for refined German Pinot Noir.
