Description
Franz Gojer’s Lagrein Granat DOC 2023 is a refined expression of South Tyrol’s flagship red grape, crafted to highlight elegance rather than sheer power. This is Lagrein with polish: dark, concentrated and structured, yet remarkably silky and precise on the palate. Sourced primarily from the renowned Furggl vineyards in Auer, it showcases how careful viticulture and sensitive handling can turn this demanding native variety into a beautifully balanced, characterful red.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Lagrein Granat shows a deep, opaque purplish ruby with almost black reflections, hinting at its concentration and intensity. The nose opens with aromas of dark forest berries—elderberry, blackberry and black cherry—woven together with notes of bittersweet chocolate and a touch of vanilla from its time in oak. Subtle nuances of juniper, bay leaf and black pepper add an enticing spicy and herbal dimension, giving the wine lift and complexity.
On the palate, this Lagrein is full-bodied and compact, yet the tannins are finely carved and never rustic or bitter. The fruit is dark and juicy, supported by a fresh, Alpine-accented acidity that keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. Flavors of ripe blackberry, plum and cassis are layered with cocoa, licorice and savory spice, leading into a long, structured finish where the minerality of the stony soils quietly comes through. Enjoyable in its youth for its generous fruit, it has the backbone and harmony to evolve gracefully over 6–10 years, gaining in complexity and softer, more velvety texture with some bottle age.
Production
The Lagrein Granat 2023 is sourced mainly from the Furggl site in Auer, in the southern part of Trentino–Südtirol, where vines grow on stony alluvial soils rich in porphyry. This rugged, well-drained terrain naturally restricts vigor and concentrates flavor, while the cool Alpine climate and strong diurnal swings help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. Rather than the traditional pergola training system, the vines are cultivated in Guyot, allowing for better canopy management, optimal sun exposure and lower yields. Harvest is conducted by hand, with strict selection of bunches to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used. In the cellar, the grapes are gently vinified to avoid extracting harsh bitterness or coarse tannins—crucial with Lagrein. Fermentation takes place with careful temperature control, followed by aging on the fine lees in oak barrels, which lends structure and subtle spice without overwhelming the variety’s dark fruit and mineral character.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-loving Lagrein that shines alongside hearty Alpine and Mediterranean dishes alike. It pairs beautifully with braised beef, lamb shanks, venison, game stews, and slow-cooked ragùs, as well as grilled sausages, porcini mushrooms and aged mountain cheeses. It also works well with richly spiced dishes featuring black pepper, juniper, or rosemary, and with roasted root vegetables or polenta. Serve at 16–18 °C; slightly cooler if you prefer a fresher, more incisive profile. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and bringing out its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
The Gojer family’s Glögglhof estate, led today by Franz and his son Florian, is one of the quiet benchmarks of quality in South Tyrol, particularly known for its refined expressions of local varieties such as Lagrein and Vernatsch. Situated in the hills around Bolzano, the estate has long championed careful vineyard work, modest yields and sensitive cellar practices as the keys to transparent, terroir-driven wines. Over the years, Gojer has earned a reputation among sommeliers and collectors for crafting reds that combine depth and precision, standing out in a region historically better known for lighter styles. The Lagrein Granat has become one of the estate’s signature bottlings, consistently praised for showing just how elegant and nuanced this traditionally robust grape can be when treated with patience and skill.
