Description
Frank John Pinot Noir Bio 2021 is a characterful, biodynamic Spätburgunder from Germany’s Pfalz region that beautifully bridges Burgundian finesse with German precision. Long a cult favorite among insiders, this cuvée has become a benchmark for elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from limestone-rich soils. Crafted with minimal intervention and bottled unfiltered, it offers a pure, authentic expression of both grape and place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a delicate brightness typical of finely made Pinot Noir. The nose opens with a touch of youthful oak that sits upfront at first, gradually giving way to layers of sour cherry, dark berry fruit, and a fine floral spectrum of violets and hibiscus tea, with a subtle earthy hint reminiscent of beetroot.
On the palate, the wine moves with a cool, almost weightless grace, guided by silky, finely woven tannins. Despite its elegant frame, it delivers a surprisingly generous, juicy core of dark, ripe fruit, wrapped in a savory, dark-spiced undertone that lends a sense of warmth and depth. The balance of freshness, fine structure and fruit concentration suggests very good aging potential: while already charming now, it will benefit from a few years in bottle to allow the oak to fully integrate and the floral and mineral nuances to become even more pronounced.
Production
The grapes for Frank John Pinot Noir Bio 2021 come from biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Pfalz with a notably high limestone content, contributing to the wine’s tension, elegance, and mineral backbone. Harvest is carried out by hand with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it to the cellar. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, followed by a maceration of over three weeks on the skins to gently extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. The wine is then aged for around two years in a mix of barriques and tonneaux on the full lees, building texture and complexity before being bottled unfiltered with only a minimal addition of sulfur.
Food & Serving
This refined yet substantial Pinot Noir is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry (especially duck), veal, pork tenderloin, game birds, or dishes featuring mushrooms, root vegetables, and light jus or reduction sauces. It also complements semi-hard cheeses and charcuterie where its acidity and fine tannins can cut through richness. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic finesse and freshness. A short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to help the oak settle and allow the floral and spicy notes to fully unfurl.
