Description

Frank John Grande Marée Riesling Brut Edition Nr. 5 is a biodynamic sparkling Riesling from Germany’s Pfalz region, crafted from base wine of the 2018 vintage. Aged an impressive 50 months on the lees, it combines the precision of German Riesling with the depth and texture usually reserved for top traditional-method sparkling wines. This limited “Edition Nr. 5” reflects Frank John’s ongoing exploration of natural forces and alternative maturation concepts, inspired in part by experimental ‘underwater’ sparkling wine aging.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling Brut shows a pale straw to light golden hue, enlivened by a very fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its extended time on the lees. The bubbles are delicate rather than aggressive, giving the wine a refined, almost creamy visual impression. On the nose, expect an inviting interplay of ripe citrus (lemon zest, mandarin), green apple and white peach layered with complex autolytic notes—fresh brioche, toasted hazelnut, and a hint of almond cream. Subtle mineral tones, wet stone and a breeze of herbal lift (lemon balm, chamomile) underline its Pfalz origins and biodynamic farming. The palate is precise and taut yet generous, with a dry brut style that balances vibrant acidity against a beautifully textured mid-palate. Zesty lime, crunchy pear and yellow plum are wrapped in savory, yeasty complexity from the 50 months on lees, lending depth and length. The finish is long, saline and mineral-driven, with a delicate grip and a lingering impression of citrus peel and fine pastry. Thanks to its structure and extended maturation before release, this cuvée has several more years of positive evolution ahead; it should drink beautifully over the next 5–7 years, gaining even more nutty, honeyed nuances with careful cellaring.

Production
Grown in the sun-drenched yet cool-influenced vineyards of the Pfalz, the Riesling for Grande Marée benefits from a mosaic of soils—sandstone, loess and limestone—that contribute both ripeness and a distinct mineral backbone. As a long-standing Demeter-certified estate, Frank John farms biodynamically, with meticulous manual work in the vineyard, low yields and a keen focus on soil vitality and biodiversity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic precision, then gently pressed. Fermentation is carried out with a natural, low-intervention philosophy, often using indigenous yeasts and extended time on fine lees to build texture. The secondary fermentation takes place in bottle in the traditional method, followed by a remarkable 50 months of maturation on the lees, which imparts depth, finesse and the ultra-fine mousse that defines this Edition Nr. 5.

Food & Serving
This refined Riesling Brut is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to elevated, delicately flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallop carpaccio, sushi and sashimi, as well as fine freshwater fish such as trout or char. Poultry in light cream sauces, veal tartare, and vegetable dishes with asparagus, fennel or artichoke also work wonderfully, as does soft-ripened cheese like Brie or Camembert. Serve well chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its tension and elegance. A short decant in a carafe, or simply pouring into large white wine or tulip-shaped sparkling glasses, can help the wine open and reveal its layered autolytic and mineral nuances.

Producer
Frank John is a highly respected name in the Pfalz, known both as a consulting oenologist and as the guiding force behind his family’s Demeter-certified estate. From the outset, the winery has championed biodynamic principles, long before they became fashionable, focusing on soil health, biodiversity and a holistic understanding of natural rhythms and cosmic influences. This philosophy translates into wines of clarity, precision and depth, with a strong sense of place. Within the region, Frank John has become a benchmark for artisanal, low-intervention craftsmanship, particularly in Riesling and traditional-method sparkling wines. The Grande Marée series, inspired by experimental aging concepts and a different way of thinking about energy and maturation, stands as one of the estate’s most distinctive achievements, regularly drawing attention from sommeliers and collectors seeking characterful, terroir-driven sparkling wines.
