Description
Françoise et Denis Clair’s Santenay Clos de Tavannes 2022 is an expressive Burgundy red from one of Santenay’s respected vineyard sites. Combining ripe red-fruit character with spice, mineral freshness and a firm finish, it offers a fine balance between generosity and structure. The Clair domaine has been based in Santenay since 1986 and has played an important role in the appellation’s modern development.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a vivid ruby-red colour. Its bouquet is inviting and layered, with aromas of ripe red berries and cherries complemented by subtle spice and earthy Burgundy nuances.
On the palate, it is powerful yet distinctly fruity, with generous red-fruit flavours supported by a mineral edge that brings tension and greater definition to the finish. The tannins and freshness give the wine good structure, while the 2022 vintage’s ripe fruit makes it approachable in its youth. It should develop additional savoury and tertiary complexity over the next several years and can be enjoyed through approximately 2028–2032, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The wine comes from Santenay in the Côte-d’Or, where limestone-rich Burgundy soils help give the wines their characteristic mineral freshness. The grapes are carefully sorted and 100% destemmed before being placed in concrete tanks below 10°C for around one week of cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation follows as the temperature rises, with colour and fruit extracted through regular pump-overs. After approximately three weeks, the wine is transferred to oak barrels, around 20% of which are new, and aged for 12 months. It is then blended in stainless-steel tanks and bottled after a total of around 18 months, following light filtration.
Food & Serving
This Santenay is well suited to roast chicken, duck, pork tenderloin, veal and mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs naturally with Burgundy classics such as beef bourguignon or coq au vin, as well as mature soft cheeses. Serve slightly cool, ideally at 14–16°C. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine and soften its youthful structure.
Producer
Domaine Clair was founded in 1986 by Françoise and Denis Clair with just five hectares, initially focused primarily on red wines from Santenay. Through inheritance and carefully selected acquisitions, the domaine has grown to around 14 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their son Jean-Baptiste joined the family estate in 2000, contributing to advances in both vineyard management and vinification. Today, the domaine’s wines are matured largely in oak in the old vaulted cellars of Saint-Aubin, reflecting a combination of traditional Burgundy character and thoughtful modern precision.
