Description
Francois et Denis Clair’s Santenay Beaurepaire Blanc 2023 is a refined Burgundy white from the Côte-d'Or, combining generous texture with the freshness and balance typical of the appellation. Crafted by a family domaine with roots in Santenay since 1986, it offers an elegant expression of Chardonnay shaped by careful élevage in oak.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, this wine opens with refined aromas of white-fleshed fruit. The palate is full-bodied and rounded, with a harmonious balance between its supple texture and youthful freshness. A persistent finish brings attractive length and poise, making the wine approachable now while allowing it to develop added complexity over the next few years.
Production
The wine comes from Santenay’s Beaurepaire climat in Burgundy, where Chardonnay benefits from the region’s limestone-rich terroir and cool continental climate. The grapes are gently pressed using a pneumatic press, after which the must is lightly settled before being transferred to oak barrels. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place naturally in barrel. The wine is aged exclusively in oak for 11 months, with approximately 20% new barrels, before being blended in stainless-steel tanks and bottled after a total of around 15 months.
Food & Serving
Its rounded texture and fresh white-fruit character make it a natural partner for roast chicken, veal, grilled or pan-fried fish, shellfish and creamy pasta dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mild cheeses such as Comté or Brie. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential for this youthful white Burgundy, although a brief airing in the glass or a small carafe can help reveal its aromas.
Producer
Domaine Clair was founded in 1986 in Santenay by Françoise and Denis Clair, initially with just five hectares focused mainly on red wines. Through inheritance and carefully selected acquisitions, the domaine has grown to 14 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their son Jean-Baptiste joined the estate in 2000, contributing to significant improvements in both viticulture and winemaking. Today, the domaine’s wines are matured in the old vaulted cellars in Saint-Aubin, reflecting a combination of Burgundian tradition, family continuity and increasingly precise production.
