Description
François et Denis Clair’s Santenay Blanc 2023 is a polished Burgundy white from a family domaine established in 1986. It combines ripe fruit, a generous opening and a lively, refreshing finish, offering an easy-drinking yet characterful expression of Santenay. The domaine has grown from its original five hectares to 14 hectares through inheritance and carefully chosen acquisitions.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a bright, inviting appearance, with the fresh golden hue typical of a young Burgundy white. Its nose opens with appealing aromas of ripe fruit, followed by a rounded and generous palate with a pleasingly full attack. The finish brings more energy and liveliness, giving the wine balance and making it particularly easy to enjoy.
Although approachable in its youth, the wine’s oak maturation and balanced freshness should allow it to develop additional depth over the next few years. It can be enjoyed now for its ripe fruit and smooth texture, or allowed to mature for greater harmony and complexity.
Production
Domaine Clair is based in Santenay in Burgundy’s Côte-d’Or, where the family farms both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across 14 hectares. The grapes are gently pressed using a pneumatic press, after which the must is lightly clarified before being transferred to oak barrels. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place naturally in barrel. The wine is then aged for 11 months in oak, with approximately 15–20% new wood, before being blended in stainless-steel tanks and bottled after a total of around 15 months. Most of the wines mature in the domaine’s old vaulted cellars in Saint-Aubin.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. This Santenay Blanc is well suited to seafood, shellfish, grilled fish, roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes and mild, soft cheeses. It is approachable straight from the bottle, but a short period of aeration or a gentle decant can help reveal its ripe fruit and rounded texture, particularly when served young.
Producer
Domaine Clair was founded in 1986 by the married couple Françoise and Denis Clair, initially with just five hectares focused mainly on red wines from Santenay. Their holdings gradually expanded through inheritance and acquisitions, and their son Jean-Baptiste joined the domaine in 2000. His work in both viticulture and winemaking helped elevate the estate’s quality and reputation. Today, the domaine is recognised for its carefully made Burgundy wines, which benefit from considered vineyard work, natural fermentation and maturation in the estate’s historic vaulted cellars.
