Description
Francoise et Denis Clair’s Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2024 offers an approachable expression of Burgundy, combining vibrant red-fruit character with a smooth, silky texture. Produced by a respected family domaine in Santenay, it reflects the Clairs’ long-standing commitment to careful vineyard work and traditional Burgundy winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Bright and youthful in appearance, the wine shows a fresh ruby colour. The nose is driven by inviting aromas of fresh red fruit, with a clean, lively character. On the palate, it is rounded and supple, supported by a silky tannin structure that gives the wine both elegance and balance.
Its fresh fruit profile makes it enjoyable in its youth, while the polished structure should allow it to develop added softness and subtle savoury nuances over the next few years. It is best served while its vibrant fruit remains expressive.
Production
The wine comes from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, a picturesque Burgundy appellation in the Côte-d’Or known for its cooler, elevated vineyard sites. The grapes are carefully sorted and 100% destemmed before being placed in concrete tanks below 10°C for approximately one week of cold maceration. As fermentation begins, colour and fruit are extracted through regular pump-overs. The wine then matures for 12 months in oak barrels, around 15% of which are new, before being blended in stainless steel tanks and bottled after 18 months following light filtration.
Food & Serving
A versatile red Burgundy, this wine is well suited to roast chicken, pork tenderloin, charcuterie, pâté, mushroom dishes and softly flavoured cheeses. Serve lightly cool at around 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and silky texture. Decanting is not essential, although a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the youthful fruit.
Producer
Domaine Clair was founded in 1986 in Santenay by Françoise and Denis Clair, beginning with just five hectares focused mainly on red wines from Santenay. Through inheritance and carefully selected acquisitions, the estate grew to 14 hectares planted with both red and white varieties. Their son Jean-Baptiste joined the domaine in 2000 and further refined its viticulture and winemaking. Today, many of the wines mature in the estate’s old vaulted cellars in Saint-Aubin, combining Burgundy tradition with a precise, modern approach.
