Description
Françoise et Denis Clair’s 2023 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc offers a fresh, expressive interpretation of Burgundy’s celebrated Côte-d’Or. Combining inviting floral aromas with generous fruit and a lively finish, it reflects the domaine’s careful approach to Chardonnay and traditional élevage in oak.
Tasting Notes
Bright and fresh in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of white flowers and fresh orchard fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intense, with a pleasing richness balanced by refreshing acidity and a clean, invigorating finish.
The wine is approachable in its youth, but its structure, natural freshness and time spent in oak should allow it to develop additional depth and harmony over the next few years. It is best enjoyed while its floral character and vibrant fruit remain at the forefront.
Production
The wine comes from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, a Burgundy appellation in the Côte-d’Or known for its elevated vineyards and fresh, energetic white wines. The grapes are gently pressed using a pneumatic press, after which the must is lightly clarified and transferred to oak barrels. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place naturally in barrel. The wine is aged for 11 months in oak, with approximately 10% new barrels, before being blended in stainless-steel tanks and bottled after a total maturation period of around 15 months.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its floral character, rounded texture and refreshing finish make it a versatile partner for seafood, shellfish, grilled fish, roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses. Decanting is not essential for this young white Burgundy, although a brief period of aeration in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic expression.
Producer
Domaine Clair was founded in 1986 in Santenay by Françoise and Denis Clair, initially with just five hectares focused primarily on Santenay red wines. Through inheritance and carefully chosen acquisitions, the domaine has grown to 14 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their son Jean-Baptiste joined the family estate in 2000, contributing to significant advances in both viticulture and winemaking. Most of the domaine’s wines are aged in the old vaulted cellars of Saint-Aubin, supporting the estate’s reputation for refined, traditionally made Burgundy.
