Description

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo 2014 is a benchmark Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from the heart of Tuscany, crafted in one of the region’s most celebrated single vineyards. This is a serious, cellar-worthy Sangiovese that marries power with finesse, showcasing just how profound and ageworthy Chianti Classico can be. Long considered one of the region’s reference wines, Vigna del Sorbo helped redefine Tuscan Sangiovese on the world stage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Vigna del Sorbo shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to emerge at the rim, hinting at its evolving complexity. The nose is refined and layered: ripe red cherry, black plum and wild berries are interwoven with notes of dried rose, tobacco leaf, cedar, and warm spices, alongside subtle hints of leather, underbrush and a touch of balsamic. On the palate, this is elegant yet firmly structured, with Sangiovese’s trademark acidity giving energy and lift. Flavours of sour cherry, blackberry and blood orange are framed by fine-grained tannins and savoury undertones of herbs, graphite, and sweet spices from well-judged oak. The 2014 vintage offers more grace than sheer power, with a long, vibrant finish that leaves impressions of red fruit, spice and mineral tension. Already beautifully approachable now with proper aeration, it still has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for another 8–12 years, gaining further tertiary complexity.

Production
Vigna del Sorbo is a south-west–facing, single vineyard in Panzano in Chianti, sitting on the famed Conca d’Oro (the “Golden Basin”), an amphitheatre of vineyards prized for its warm exposures and galestro-rich marl and limestone soils. These conditions give naturally low yields and excellent ripeness, while preserving freshness and aromatic intensity. The Sangiovese grapes (from older, densely planted vines) are hand-harvested in small crates, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation is carried out with temperature control in stainless steel or concrete, with extended maceration on the skins to extract colour, tannin and aromatic depth. The wine is then aged in French oak (largely tonneaux and/or barriques) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine to develop its signature balance of fruit, spice and savoury complexity before bottling and further bottle aging.

Food & Serving
Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo 2014 is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and richly flavoured dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, wild boar ragù, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux or Burgundy-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s complexity, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Fontodi is one of the leading estates in Chianti Classico, located in Panzano at the centre of the Conca d’Oro, an area long regarded as a “cru” for Sangiovese thanks to its ideal exposure and soils. Family-owned and organically farmed, Fontodi has been at the forefront of quality-focused, estate-bottled Chianti since the late 20th century. Under the direction of winemaker Giovanni Manetti, the estate has become known for combining traditional Tuscan character with meticulous vineyard work and a precise, modern approach in the cellar. Vigna del Sorbo is their flagship Gran Selezione and one of the most acclaimed single-vineyard expressions of Sangiovese in the region, consistently earning high critical praise and helping cement Panzano’s reputation among Italy’s top terroirs.
