Description

Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is the flagship expression from the Padovani sisters – a pure Sangiovese that captures the soul of Montalcino with remarkable precision and finesse. This is a Brunello that marries depth and structure with an almost Burgundian elegance, offering both immediate pleasure and impressive aging potential. Crafted in tiny quantities from carefully tended vineyards, it stands out for its energy, purity of fruit, and unmistakable sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 shows a luminous, deep garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and classic Sangiovese character. The nose is complex and evolving, with layers of wild cherry, blood orange, and red plum interwoven with dried rose petals, sweet herbs, tobacco leaf, and hints of cedar, leather, and spice. Subtle notes of underbrush, iron, and earth emerge with air, adding a distinctly Montalcino minerality. On the palate, this Brunello is structured yet refined, with vibrant acidity carrying pure red fruit, savory spice, and fine-grained tannins that are firm but already nicely integrated. Flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate, and redcurrant are supported by nuances of licorice, dried thyme, tea leaf, and a gentle balsamic lift on the finish. The wine is still youthful and will gain further complexity over the next decade or more. Enjoyable now with a bit of air, it has the balance and backbone to age gracefully for 10–15 years, rewarding cellaring with greater aromatic depth and silkier texture.

Production
Fonterenza farms their vines in the southern reaches of Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (shaly marl), limestone, and clay soils, combined with altitude and ventilated exposures, gives Sangiovese both ripeness and tension. The vineyards are worked by hand with organic, low-intervention principles to preserve biodiversity and express the nuances of the terroir. Grapes are harvested manually at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows a traditional approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, long macerations to extract fine tannins and complexity, and aging in large neutral oak (often botti) to allow the wine to develop slowly without masking its character. The result is an authentic Brunello that privileges finesse and place over overt oak and heaviness.

Food & Serving
This Brunello di Montalcino 2018 shines alongside classic Tuscan cuisine and refined, savory dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, roasted game birds, or aged Pecorino Toscano. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and hearty lentil or bean stews enriched with olive oil and herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant will suffice mainly to let any sediment settle.

Producer
Fonterenza is the life’s work of twin sisters Francesca and Margherita Padovani, who established their estate in the late 1990s on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino. From the outset, they have championed organic farming, biodiversity, and minimal-intervention winemaking, positioning Fonterenza as one of the most characterful and artisanal producers in the appellation. Working only with Sangiovese and focusing on small, meticulous production, they have earned a reputation among wine lovers for Brunellos that are both traditional and vibrantly contemporary—wines that speak clearly of their soils, their microclimate, and the sisters’ thoughtful, hands-on approach. Over the years, Fonterenza has become a reference point for those seeking elegant, terroir-driven Brunello di Montalcino with real personality and a strong sense of origin.
