Description
Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino 2013 in magnum is the pinnacle of the Fonterenza sisters’ work: a beautifully complex, elegant and deeply expressive Sangiovese. Drawn from prime Montalcino terroir and bottled in a large 1.5 L format, it balances power and finesse with a clear sense of place. The 2013 vintage, now entering its prime, showcases why Brunello holds such a revered place in Tuscan wine history, marrying traditional methods with a soulful, artisanal touch.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Brunello shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, testifying both to its age and its classic style. The nose is layered and evolving: dark cherry and plum are interwoven with dried rose petals, Tuscan herbs, orange peel, leather, and subtle notes of tobacco, cedar, and forest floor. Hints of spice and mineral tones underline its Montalcino origins.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely etched, with ripe but firm tannins and a vibrant spine of acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Flavors of sour cherry, black fig, and blood orange unfold slowly, followed by savory notes of balsamic, tea leaf, sweet spices, and earthy depth. The magnum format has preserved impressive freshness and structure, giving the wine a long, graceful finish. While already highly enjoyable, especially with a good decant, this 2013 magnum has excellent aging potential and should continue to gain complexity over the next 10–15 years or more.
Production
Fonterenza’s Brunello comes from organically farmed vineyards on the southern slopes of Montalcino, where rocky, limestone-clay soils and significant day–night temperature swings give Sangiovese its aromatic intensity and firm structure. The sisters work with low yields and careful, hand harvesting, selecting only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters. Vinification follows a traditional, artisanal approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, extended maceration to extract fine tannins and depth, and long aging in large neutral casks that respect the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir. The result is a Brunello that speaks clearly of its origin, unmasked by excessive oak or manipulation.
Food & Serving
This 2013 Brunello in magnum is ideal for the table and for sharing, pairing beautifully with classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, and aged pecorino. It also shines alongside truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its structure and youthfulness in magnum, decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet.
Producer
Fonterenza is the project of sisters Francesca and Margherita Padovani, who established their estate in the southern part of Montalcino with a clear vision: to craft authentic, terroir-driven Brunello through organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. From relatively small holdings, they have become one of the most compelling artisanal voices in the region, championing old-vine Sangiovese and traditional methods. Their Brunello di Montalcino is widely regarded as the estate’s flagship wine and has attracted attention among collectors and sommeliers for its depth, purity, and ability to age gracefully, underscoring Fonterenza’s significance in the new wave of top-quality, independently minded Tuscan producers.
