Description
Fontanafredda Barolo Paiagallo Vigna La Villa 2019 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of the estate’s most historic crus, nestled in the heart of the MGA Paiagallo. Drawn from a parcel long linked to the royal court of Savoy, this wine marries classical Barolo structure with a particularly seductive, fruit‑driven elegance. It stands out for its balance of depth, refinement and a distinctive sense of place on the hills of Barolo in Piemonte.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Paiagallo Vigna La Villa shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights, typical of well-crafted Nebbiolo. The nose opens with precise aromas of small red fruits—wild strawberries, redcurrants and pomegranate—layered with notes of blackberry, rose petals and subtle hints of violets, dried herbs and sweet spices.
On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied yet poised, with a silken texture supported by sweet, polished tannins rather than harsh grip. Flavours of red cherry, raspberry and blackberry are interwoven with liquorice, a touch of tar, and delicate earthy-mineral nuances from the silt-, sand- and clay-rich soils. The finish is long and persistent, echoing red fruits and spice with a refined, lingering aftertaste. While already approachable in its youth thanks to its supple tannin profile, this 2019 has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes for Barolo Paiagallo Vigna La Villa come from a historic vineyard set on a narrow land tongue within the MGA Paiagallo, just above the village of Barolo. The site’s complex mix of silt, sand and clay contributes both aromatic lift and fine-grained structure to the Nebbiolo. Vines are carefully tended and typically harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, optimally ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, traditional Barolo methods are combined with modern precision: extended maceration on the skins extracts colour, tannin and aromatics, followed by a long maturation in large oak casks (and in some cases a portion in smaller barrels), allowing the wine to develop its hallmark complexity and polish while preserving the purity of fruit and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an excellent match for classic Piemontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (braised beef), tajarin with truffle, and rich ragùs, as well as roasted game, lamb, osso buco and mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and structure. For optimal enjoyment, decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open and reveal its layered bouquet and silky tannins, especially in its younger years.
Producer
Fontanafredda is one of Piemonte’s most historic and influential estates, founded in the 19th century by the first King of unified Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, as the royal estate of the House of Savoy. Located in the heart of the Langhe, the winery played a pivotal role in establishing Barolo as one of Italy’s great noble wines. Today, Fontanafredda oversees an extensive patchwork of vineyards across top crus, including Paiagallo, and is recognised for combining traditional Nebbiolo craftsmanship with sustainable vineyard practices. The estate has garnered international acclaim for the consistency and quality of its Barolo, helping to define the character and reputation of the region on the world stage.
