Description

Fontanafredda Alta Langa Limited Edition Brut 2021 is a refined traditional-method sparkling wine from the hills of lower Piemonte, crafted from classic Champagne grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Aged for at least 30 months on the lees, it captures both the character of its vintage and the distinctive elegance of Alta Langa. This limited edition bottling stands out for its finesse, structure and enveloping mousse, offering a distinctly Piedmontese take on prestige sparkling wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Alta Langa shows a brilliant straw-yellow hue with subtle golden highlights and a fine, persistent perlage that forms a delicate crown in the glass. The nose opens with notes of crisp green apple, pear and lemon zest, followed by hints of white flowers, fresh brioche, toasted hazelnut and a touch of mineral chalkiness from the limestone soils. On the palate, the wine is dry, vibrant and beautifully balanced, with a creamy, enveloping bubble that carries flavors of citrus, stone fruit and subtle pastry cream. The structure from Pinot Nero adds backbone and depth, while Chardonnay brings tensile freshness and finesse. A long, savory finish with notes of almond and saline minerality invites another sip. Thanks to its extended lees aging, this vintage Brut has the complexity to evolve for several more years in bottle, gaining additional nuance of toast, honey and dried fruits over a 5–7 year horizon from the vintage.

Production
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Alta Langa area of southern Piemonte, the grapes grow on steep hillsides characterized by marl and limestone-rich soils that contribute tension and minerality. The cooler climate and significant diurnal shifts allow Chardonnay and Pinot Nero to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic precision. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection, often in small crates to protect the berries. After gentle pressing, the base wines are vinified separately at controlled temperatures, then blended and bottled for the second fermentation following the classic metodo classico (traditional method). The wine then rests on its lees for a minimum of 30 months, gaining texture, complexity and fine mousse before disgorgement and a carefully measured dosage to maintain a dry, balanced style.

Food & Serving
This Alta Langa Brut 2021 is a versatile food companion, ideal with refined appetizers such as oysters, prawns, scallop carpaccio and caviar, as well as classic Italian antipasti of prosciutto crudo, vitello tonnato and aged cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with sushi, shellfish-based pastas, delicate fish dishes and light poultry preparations. Serve well-chilled at 6–8°C (43–46°F) in a tulip-shaped sparkling wine glass to enhance the aromatic complexity. A brief 10–15 minutes open in the glass is sufficient; decanting is not necessary, but avoiding over-chilling will allow the wine’s texture and nuances from lees aging to fully emerge.
