Description
Flor de Pingus 2018 is the visionary “second wine” of Peter Sisseck’s iconic Dominio de Pingus estate in Ribera del Duero, offering a more approachable expression of this cult winery’s style without sacrificing depth or pedigree. Crafted from old-vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grown in some of the region’s finest parcels, it combines intensity with a remarkable sense of energy and finesse. The 2018 vintage is widely praised in Ribera del Duero for its balance and freshness, making this bottling a particularly refined and ageworthy expression of the estate’s philosophy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Flor de Pingus 2018 shows a deep, opaque ruby core with a violet rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is generous and layered, offering pure black fruit—blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum—interwoven with notes of violets, graphite, wild herbs, and finely integrated oak tones of cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of cedar.
On the palate, this is full-bodied yet composed, with a beautiful tension between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. Dark berries and damson plum are framed by polished, chalky tannins and a mineral backbone that speaks clearly of Ribera del Duero’s limestone-rich soils. Subtle nuances of licorice, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate emerge with air, adding complexity without heaviness. The finish is long, precise, and savory, suggesting strong aging potential. Well stored, Flor de Pingus 2018 should evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining further aromatic complexity and silkier texture.
Production
Flor de Pingus is sourced primarily from old, low-yielding Tinto Fino vines around the village of La Horra in Ribera del Duero, where high altitude, significant diurnal shifts, and poor, well-drained clay-limestone soils naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor. The vineyards are farmed organically and along biodynamic principles, with meticulous attention to the health of the soils and vines. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are used. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or concrete, using indigenous yeasts, to preserve purity of fruit and a sense of terroir. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a mix of new and used, depending on the vintage) for around a year and a half, allowing it to gain texture and complexity while keeping oak influence balanced and finely integrated. Bottling is done with minimal intervention to retain character and vibrancy.
Food & Serving
Flor de Pingus 2018 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as grilled or roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, Iberian pork presa, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and mature hard cheeses like Manchego or aged Comté. For best expression, serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours before serving—to allow the wine to open, soften the tannins, and fully reveal its aromatic complexity, especially in its youth.
Producer
Although this bottling is sometimes confused with other estates in Ribera del Duero, Flor de Pingus is, in fact, produced by Dominio de Pingus, the groundbreaking winery founded by Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck in the mid-1990s. From its first vintages, Pingus reshaped the reputation of Spanish fine wine, proving that Tinto Fino from carefully tended old vines could stand alongside the world’s great reds. The estate’s focus on extremely low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and respectful, minimalist winemaking has made it one of the most sought-after names in the region. Flor de Pingus was conceived as a more accessible expression of the Pingus philosophy—still sourced from top sites and old vines, but crafted in a style that can be enjoyed earlier. Today, Dominio de Pingus is recognized as one of Ribera del Duero’s leading producers and a reference point for terroir-driven Spanish reds.
