Description

Ferrero Barbera d'Alba 2023 is a juicy, vibrant expression of Barbera from the rolling hills of Piemonte, crafted with care by the Ferrero family. Marrying ripe fruit with subtle spice from barrique aging, it offers both immediate pleasure and enough structure to shine at the table. This cuvée reflects the classic Barbera d’Alba style: generous, food-friendly and deeply rooted in the traditions of one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ferrero Barbera d'Alba 2023 shows a deep, luminous ruby-red color with purple highlights, hinting at its youthful energy. On the nose, it opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe cherries and blueberries, intertwined with delicate rose petals. The time in small French barriques adds layers of warm spice, with nuances of vanilla and a touch of sweet baking spice emerging as the wine breathes. On the palate, this Barbera is fresh and lively, driven by the grape’s naturally vibrant acidity and a pleasantly firm structure. Flavors of ripe cherry and dark berries are framed by subtle notes of vanilla and sweet licorice from the barrel aging, giving the wine a spicy, almost velvety undertone. The finish is long and persistent, carried by both fruit and spice. While eminently enjoyable now for its juicy, youthful character, the combination of acidity, fruit concentration and careful oak integration suggests an aging potential of around 3–6 years in bottle, during which the spice and fruit will knit together even more harmoniously.

Production
Ferrero Barbera d'Alba 2023 is sourced from Barbera vineyards in the classic hills surrounding Alba in Piemonte, where calcareous clay and marl soils, combined with a temperate continental climate, give Barbera its characteristic intensity and freshness. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity while ensuring generous fruit concentration. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain purity of aroma and varietal character. After fermentation, the wine is matured for about 10 months in small 225-liter French barriques, with a thoughtful balance of 60% new and 40% used barrels. This regimen lends structure, spice and complexity without overwhelming the natural fruitiness of the Barbera.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, game dishes, hearty pasta with rich ragù, and robust meat-based stews. It also complements aged hard cheeses and savory pizza or charcuterie platters. Serve at about 16–18°C to highlight both the fruit and the spice. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and soften the oak-derived notes, especially in its youth, revealing greater aromatic complexity and a more seamless palate.

Producer
Fratelli Ferrero is a small, quality-focused family estate in Piemonte, led by winemaker Renato Ferrero, who has earned a strong reputation for producing some of the region’s most characterful Barbera and Barolo wines. Working in a traditional style with a measured use of new oak, Renato aims for concentration, balance and authenticity rather than excessive modernity, allowing the terroir to speak clearly. The wines mature in a picturesque, centuries-old cellar, where time and patience shape their final character. Although production is limited, Ferrero’s bottles have gained recognition in Denmark and beyond, with several cuvées being singled out as best in class at local tastings. The estate also has a welcoming, personal touch thanks to Renato’s Danish wife, Nina, who makes it an especially appealing destination for visiting wine lovers.
