Description
Ferraton Père & Fils Hermitage Les Miaux Rouge 2018 is a distinguished expression of Syrah from one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations. Sourced from carefully selected parcels on the legendary slopes of Hermitage, this wine delivers depth, structure, and a refined sense of place. Les Miaux stands out for its combination of power and finesse, showcasing classic Northern Rhône character in a polished, age-worthy style. The unique selling point of this cuvée lies in its origin: Hermitage is one of France’s great red wine terroirs, known for producing Syrah of remarkable intensity and longevity. Les Miaux typically benefits from meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful élevage, resulting in a wine that balances dark fruit richness with savory complexity and mineral precision. Ferraton’s roots in the Rhône date back to the 1940s, and their long history—as both growers and once as a respected négociant—has made them a key reference in the region, especially after their collaboration and later partnership with the renowned Chapoutier family, which elevated quality even further.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ferraton Père & Fils Hermitage Les Miaux Rouge 2018 shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a slightly brighter rim, hinting at both concentration and careful aging. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered: ripe blackberries and cassis are woven together with notes of black cherry, violet, cracked black pepper, and smoked meat, underpinned by nuances of graphite, licorice, and subtle toasted oak/spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, structured, and elegant, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by firm, fine-grained tannins. Flavors of black plum, blackberry compote, and wild blueberry mingle with olive tapenade, cured meat, cedar, and a touch of cocoa and espresso. There’s a pronounced mineral streak and fresh acidity that keep the wine lively despite its power, leading to a long, savory finish with lingering notes of pepper, violets, and warm stones. The 2018 vintage offers approachability in its youth thanks to its generous fruit, but the underlying structure suggests significant aging potential—properly cellared, this wine should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and dried herbs.
Production
Les Miaux is drawn from select plots on the storied Hermitage hill, where steep granitic slopes, varied exposures, and thin, stony topsoils give Syrah its hallmark intensity and mineral drive. The continental climate with warm, sunny days and cooler nights allows for slow, even ripening, preserving aromatic complexity and natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the difficulty of working the terraces, with rigorous sorting in both the vineyard and winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used.
In the cellar, Ferraton Père & Fils favors a vinification style that respects the character of the terroir and the vintage. The Syrah is traditionally destemmed (sometimes with a portion of whole clusters depending on year and parcel), followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. Gentle punch-downs and pump-overs help achieve balance rather than excessive extraction. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of oak barrels—often including a portion of new or relatively young French oak—with the rest in older barrels to add complexity and texture without overwhelming the fruit. This élevage, typically around 12–18 months, allows the tannins to integrate and the wine to gain aromatic depth before bottling.
Food & Serving
Ferraton Hermitage Les Miaux Rouge 2018 is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its power and complexity. Classic pairings include roasted or grilled lamb (rack, leg, or shoulder), beef ribeye, venison, and other game birds, as well as braised short ribs and slow-cooked stews like daube de boeuf. It also works beautifully with dishes featuring mushrooms, black olives, or Mediterranean herbs, and with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, mature Gouda, or aged cheddar.
Serve this wine at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without accentuating the alcohol. For current drinking, decanting is recommended: about 1–2 hours in a medium to large decanter will help soften the tannins and open up the bouquet. As the wine ages, shorter decanting times may be sufficient—just enough to let it breathe and shed any initial reduction.
Producer
Ferraton Père & Fils is a historic Rhône estate whose origins date back to 1946, when Jean-Orens Ferraton founded the domaine in Tain-l’Hermitage, at the heart of Northern Rhône Syrah country. Over the decades, the family steadily acquired and farmed prime parcels in celebrated appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph. Their turning point came in the 1990s, when a close friendship with Michel Chapoutier led to a technical partnership and eventually Chapoutier’s involvement in the estate, bringing renewed focus on terroir expression and quality.
Today, Ferraton Père & Fils is recognized for its meticulous work in the vineyards, with a strong emphasis on sustainable and, in many parcels, biodynamic practices. The domaine has become an important name in the Northern Rhône, consistently producing characterful, site-driven wines that reflect the nuances of their origins. Their Hermitage cuvées, including Les Miaux, are considered among the estate’s flagships, regularly earning critical acclaim and reinforcing Ferraton’s status as a serious, quality-driven producer in one of France’s most prestigious red wine regions.
