Description
Fèlsina Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia 2019 is a powerful, single-vineyard Sangiovese that captures the wild, stony heart of Tuscany in a deeply refined style. Crafted from the historic Colonia vineyard, this Gran Selezione sits at the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid, offering structure, depth and impressive aging potential. Born of a three-generation family project, it is both a collector’s bottle and an expressive, characterful red for serious Sangiovese lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Colonia shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and refinement. The nose opens with pure Sangiovese character: dark cherries and wild red berries, followed by notes of dried rose petals, sweet tobacco, blood orange peel and a graphite-like minerality. Subtle layers of cedar, baking spice and a touch of underbrush emerge with air, adding complexity and dimension.
On the palate, this wine is focused and vertical, with firm yet polished tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the fruit precise and energetic. Flavors of black cherry, juicy plum and red currant intertwine with savory nuances of leather, dried herbs, licorice and crushed stone. The finish is long, taut and mineral-driven, suggesting many years of evolution ahead. While already enjoyable with a proper decant, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should continue to develop greater aromatic complexity and textural harmony over the next 10–15 years or more, depending on cellar conditions.
Production
The Colonia vineyard takes its name from an old heliotherapy colony located on this elevated, sun-drenched site in the Fèlsina estate. Perched on poor, rocky soils rich in galestro and limestone, the terroir naturally limits yields and enhances concentration, giving Sangiovese a distinctive combination of ripeness, structure and minerality. The parcel was the result of a long replanting project initiated in 1966 by Domenico Poggiali and his son Giuseppe, halted in the mid-1980s due to the complexity of subdividing the land, and then revived in 1991 by grandson Giovanni. The vines were finally established in 1993, and the first harvest took place in 1997. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar, traditional vinification emphasizes Sangiovese’s purity: fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by extended aging in carefully chosen oak (often a mix of large casks and barriques) to polish the tannins without overwhelming the wine’s distinctive terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Gran Selezione is a natural partner for rich, savory Tuscan-inspired dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb, game birds, or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. It also shines with aged Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano and mushroom-based dishes, particularly those featuring truffle or porcini. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses to allow the aromatics to blossom. For optimal enjoyment, decant the 2019 Colonia for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to soften the structure and fully reveal its layered complexity.
Producer
Fèlsina is one of Chianti Classico’s benchmark estates, renowned for its unwavering focus on Sangiovese and its deep respect for traditional Tuscan winemaking. Located in the southeastern part of the appellation, on the border with the Crete Senesi, the estate benefits from a mosaic of soils and exposures that give remarkable nuance to its wines. Since the 1960s, the Poggiali family has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Chianti Classico, investing in meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful replanting projects like Colonia. Over the decades, Fèlsina has earned international acclaim for its age-worthy, terroir-driven reds, and its Gran Selezione bottlings, including Colonia, are widely regarded as some of the most distinctive and collectible Sangioveses in the region.
