Description

Fèlsina Chianti Classico Berardenga 2022 is a benchmark Sangiovese from the southeastern edge of the Chianti Classico zone, where the denomination meets the rolling hills of Colli Senesi. This is a wine that balances classic Tuscan structure with vibrant, modern drinkability, making it as suitable for the dinner table tonight as for a few years in the cellar. Sourced entirely from estate vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, this bottling has long been considered one of the finest and most authentic expressions of Chianti Classico, with a production history that dates back to 1967.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Fèlsina Chianti Classico Berardenga shows a luminous, medium-deep ruby red with garnet highlights at the rim. The color hints at both the wine’s energy and its traditional Sangiovese character. The nose is immediately expressive, offering notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and cranberries layered with dried herbs, violets, and a touch of cedar and sweet tobacco. Subtle hints of blood orange zest, underbrush, and warm terracotta add a distinctly Tuscan earthiness. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet firm, with juicy red fruit up front framed by vibrant acidity and finely chiseled tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate, and red plum are joined by savory notes of licorice, dried thyme, and a delicate mineral edge that reflects the varied soils of the estate. The finish is long, fresh, and pleasantly mouthwatering, promising excellent versatility at the table. While the 2022 is approachable in its youth and already well-knit, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over 8–10 years, gaining complexity, more tertiary notes, and silkier tannins with time in bottle.

Production
The grapes for Fèlsina Chianti Classico Berardenga come from estate vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of Chianti Classico, northeast of Siena. The sites are planted on breezy slopes between 320 and 420 meters above sea level, facing mostly southwest, which ensures excellent sunlight exposure while preserving freshness thanks to the altitude and constant air circulation. The soils are geologically diverse: higher parcels feature quartz sandstone and alberese mixed with alluvial pebbles, while vineyards nearer the Colli Senesi boundary are marked by stratified sandstone and silt that recall the nearby Crete Senesi. This mosaic of terroirs contributes to the wine’s depth, minerality, and aromatic complexity. Sangiovese is harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified, typically with fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks and maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma, and tannin in a balanced way. The wine is then aged in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and neutral barriques, allowing it to develop texture and harmony without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the signature freshness of Chianti Classico.

Food & Serving
Fèlsina Chianti Classico Berardenga 2022 is exceptionally food friendly and pairs beautifully with a wide range of Italian and Mediterranean dishes. Classic Tuscan pairings include bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled or roasted lamb, and rustic pork dishes such as porchetta or fennel-scented sausages. It is equally at home with tomato-based pastas, pappardelle al ragù, mushroom risotto, roasted chicken, and aged pecorino or other firm, savory cheeses. For the best expression, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, giving the wine a brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromas open and softens the tannins slightly; as it ages, a gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Fèlsina is one of the most respected estates in Tuscany, widely credited with helping to elevate Chianti Classico to its modern reputation for quality and authenticity. Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, at the southeastern border of the denomination, the estate has been cultivating vines on these historic hills for decades and released its first vintage of Chianti Classico in 1967. Over the years, Fèlsina has become known for its unwavering commitment to Sangiovese, traditional winemaking, and meticulous work in the vineyard, often vinifying and aging parcels separately to preserve the character of each site. The winery’s position at the crossroads of Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi gives its wines a distinctive profile that combines structure, depth, and freshness. Fèlsina’s Chianti Classico Berardenga is regularly praised by critics and enthusiasts alike and has earned the estate a reputation as a reference point not only for the appellation, but for Sangiovese-based wines across Italy.
