Description
Felix Peters Chardonnay Vice Versa 2022 is a characterful, Burgundian‑inspired Chardonnay from the limestone‑rich hills of southern Rheinhessen. Crafted as a joint passion project between winemaker Felix Peters from Nierstein and wine enthusiast Kai Müller from Oppenheim, it combines German precision with a distinctly international flair. From nearly 30‑year‑old vines in a prized Flörsheim site near the renowned Frauenberg, this wine delivers depth, elegance and a fine sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Chardonnay Vice Versa 2022 shows a pale to medium straw colour with subtle golden highlights, hinting at both freshness and gentle oak maturation. The nose is refined and layered: delicate white blossom, yellow apple and ripe citrus peel are intertwined with nuances of orange zest, a touch of stone fruit and a discreet, smoky note from the barrique.
On the palate, the wine is precise and finely textured, with a cool, chalky backbone that reflects its limestone soils. Juicy orchard fruits, citrus and a hint of ripe pear are supported by a subtle creaminess from the lees and oak, while the wood remains beautifully integrated rather than dominant. The finish is long, saline and elegant, with a fine acidity that promises very good aging potential over the next 5–7 years, during which the smoky and nutty nuances should become even more complex.
Production
The Chardonnay Vice Versa 2022 comes from almost three‑decade‑old vines rooted in the limestone‑rich soils typical of the Wonnegau subregion of Rheinhessen, in a Flörsheim site not far from the famous Frauenberg. This calcareous terroir provides excellent drainage and naturally low yields, giving concentration and minerality to the fruit. Grapes are harvested selectively by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters reach the press. After whole‑bunch pressing, the small quantity of juice is fermented and matured in seasoned barriques sourced from prestigious Burgundy estates, lending finesse rather than overt oak flavour. Prior to bottling, the wine undergoes only minimal filtration, preserving texture, aromatic detail and a clear expression of its origin.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes such as roasted poultry, veal in light cream sauces, grilled sea bass or turbot, scallops, and richer seafood pastas. It also complements mushroom risotto, vegetable tarts and mild, creamy cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity; a short decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium‑sized white wine carafe can help the wine open up and better reveal its subtle oak, floral and mineral notes.
Producer
Weingut F. & F. Peters, based in Nierstein on the Rhine, is known for crafting precise, terroir‑driven wines that showcase the diversity of Rheinhessen’s vineyards. Under the guidance of Felix Peters, the estate combines traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibility, placing particular emphasis on careful vineyard work and minimal‑intervention cellaring. Rheinhessen has evolved into one of Germany’s most dynamic wine regions, and projects like Chardonnay Vice Versa highlight its potential beyond Riesling, especially on limestone‑dominated sites. By sourcing fruit from old vines near the renowned Frauenberg and maturing the wine in ex‑Burgundy barrels, Peters has created a Chardonnay that stands as a noteworthy example of the region’s growing reputation for world‑class, cool‑climate Chardonnay.
